Skyrim's rich world is brimming with resources essential for crafting powerful weapons, armor, potions, and enchantments. Understanding where to find these materials and how to use them is fundamental to becoming a master artisan and a formidable adventurer. From common ores to rare alchemical ingredients, knowledge is your greatest asset.

Crafting in Skyrim is broadly divided into three main professions: Smithing, Alchemy, and Enchanting. Each requires specific materials. For Smithing, you'll primarily need ores (Iron, Steel, Silver, Dwarven, Ebony, Malachite, Moonstone, Quicksilver, Gold, Orichalcum, Corundum, and Stalhrim) and ingots derived from them. These can be mined from ore veins found throughout the world, purchased from blacksmiths, or smelted from scrap metal. Leather and leather strips are also crucial for crafting leather armor and reinforcing other pieces. For Alchemy, the world is your pantry. Ingredients are gathered from plants, fungi, and creatures. Each ingredient has four effects, and by combining ingredients with a shared effect, you can create potent potions and poisons. Some common and useful ingredients include Blue Mountain Flower (Fortify Magicka), Wheat (Restore Health), Fly Amanita (Damage Stamina), and Dragon's Tongue (Fire Resistance). For Enchanting, you'll need Soul Gems filled with the souls of slain creatures or humanoids, and enchantable items. Common Soul Gems include Petty, Lesser, Common, Greater, and Grand Soul Gems, with filled gems being more valuable. The type of soul captured determines the strength of the enchantment. Resources can be found in several ways: mining ore veins in caves and mountains, foraging for plants in forests and plains, hunting animals for pelts and alchemical components, and looting dungeons and enemy corpses. Blacksmiths and alchemists in towns often sell several materials, though at a higher cost. Don't overlook the value of Dwarven scrap metal found in Dwemer ruins; it's an excellent source of valuable ingots. For rare ingredients like Dragon Scales and Dragon Bones, you'll need to defeat dragons. Stalhrim, found primarily on Solstheim, is essential for crafting powerful frost-enchanted gear. Prioritizing the acquisition of these materials will allow you to craft superior gear, create powerful buffs and debuffs, and imbue your equipment with devastating magical properties.
