Equipping Items

Mastering your inventory and quickly swapping items is crucial for success in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Unlike previous Zelda titles, many of your essential tools are rented or purchased from Ravio's Shop, offering unprecedented freedom in tackling dungeons and puzzles in a non-linear fashion. Understanding how to equip and utilize these items efficiently will significantly enhance your gameplay experience.

Accessing the Item Screen

To equip or change your currently assigned items, you'll need to open the Item Screen. This is done by pressing the X button at any time during gameplay (outside of cutscenes or dialogue). The Item Screen displays all the items you currently possess, whether they are permanent acquisitions or rented/purchased from Ravio.

Assigning Items to Buttons

Once on the Item Screen, you'll notice two large circles at the bottom of the screen, labeled Y and X (or sometimes A and B depending on your region/settings, but Y and X are standard for item assignment). These represent the physical buttons on your Nintendo 3DS that you'll use to activate your chosen items.

Select an Item: Using the D-Pad or the Circle Pad, navigate the cursor to the item you wish to equip. For example, if you want to use the Bow, move the cursor over its icon.
Assign to Button: With the item highlighted, tap the Y button or the X button on your 3DS's touchscreen (or press the corresponding physical button) to assign that item to the chosen slot. You'll see the item's icon appear in the selected circle.
Confirm and Exit: Once you've assigned your desired items, press the X button again to close the Item Screen and return to gameplay. Your newly equipped items are now ready for use!

Strategic Item Management

Effective item management involves more than just knowing how to equip them. Consider the following strategies:

Dungeon Specifics: Before entering a new dungeon, review its known challenges or the items you've recently acquired. For instance, the Hammer is essential for activating certain switches and breaking specific blocks, while the Hookshot is invaluable for crossing gaps. Equip items that you anticipate needing frequently.
Combat Encounters: For combat-heavy areas, ensure you have offensive items readily available. The Fire Rod is excellent for dealing with groups of enemies, and the Ice Rod can freeze foes for strategic attacks. Don't forget your Lamp for dark areas!
Exploration Tools: When exploring the overworld, items like the Pegasus Boots for quick travel or the Bomb for revealing hidden passages are often useful.
Quick Swaps: Don't be afraid to pause and re-equip items frequently. The game is designed for this flexibility. If you encounter a puzzle requiring the Boomerang but have the Sand Rod equipped, a quick trip to the Item Screen is all it takes.
Stamina Considerations: Remember that most rented items consume your Stamina Gauge. Keep an eye on your green Stamina Bar at the top of the screen. If it's depleted, you won't be able to use your equipped item until it refills.
