Subscreens

Understanding Link's various subscreens is crucial for managing your inventory, tracking progress, and navigating the vast worlds of Hyrule and Lorule. Pressing the START or X button will bring up the main menu, which then allows you to cycle through different subscreens using the L and R shoulder buttons. Familiarize yourself with each one to become a master adventurer!

Item Subscreen (Default)

This is your primary inventory management screen. Here, you'll see all the items Link has collected, organized for quick access and assignment.

  • Equipping Items: To assign an item to either the Y or X button, simply tap the desired item on the touch screen and then tap the corresponding button icon (Y or X) at the bottom of the screen.
  • Rented vs. Owned Items: Items you've rented from Ravio will have a small purple bag icon next to them. Remember, these items are lost if Link falls in battle! Owned items, purchased permanently, will not have this icon. Prioritize purchasing key items like the Bow, Boomerang, and Hookshot as soon as you can afford them to avoid losing progress.
  • Consumables: Items like Potions and Fairy Bottles are also managed here. Ensure you always have a full bottle of Red Potion before heading into a challenging dungeon or boss fight. You can purchase Red Potions from the Witch's House in the Eastern Palace area of Hyrule.
  • Upgrade Tracking: As you progress, you'll find opportunities to upgrade certain items. For example, the Master Sword will gain power after defeating specific bosses. Keep an eye on your item descriptions for any changes!

Map Subscreen

The map is your indispensable guide through both Hyrule and Lorule. It displays your current location, points of interest, and dungeon layouts.

  • World Map: This view shows the overall layout of Hyrule or Lorule. Key locations like towns, dungeons, and important landmarks are marked. As you explore, more of the map will be revealed.
  • Dungeon Map: When inside a dungeon, the map automatically switches to show the dungeon's layout.
    • Compass: Once you find the Compass within a dungeon (often in a chest), it will reveal the location of the boss on your map, marked with a distinct skull icon.
    • Small Keys & Big Key: The map will also indicate the locations of any collected Small Keys and the Big Key (if found) within the dungeon.
    • Your Position: A small arrow indicates Link's current position and direction.
  • Placing Markers: You can place up to five custom markers on the map by tapping a location on the touch screen. This is incredibly useful for remembering where you saw a tempting chest you couldn't reach, a challenging enemy, or a secret entrance.
  • Switching Worlds: The map subscreen allows you to easily see which world you are currently in (Hyrule or Lorule) and how the two worlds align. This is vital for solving many of the game's puzzles that involve merging between dimensions.

Quest Subscreen

This screen keeps track of your main objectives, collected items, and other important game statistics.

  • Main Quests: The top section often displays your current primary objective, guiding you on where to go next to advance the story.
  • Collected Items: This section lists significant items you've acquired, such as the three Pendants of Virtue, the Master Sword, and the various Sages you've rescued.
  • Heart Pieces & Containers: Keep track of how many Heart Pieces you've collected out of the four needed to form a full Heart Container. It also shows your total number of Heart Containers.
  • Maiamai Count: This is a crucial tracker for your progress with Mother Maiamai. It shows how many lost Maiamais you've found and returned to her cave in Lake Hylia. Remember, returning 10 Maiamais allows her to upgrade one of your rented or owned items!
  • Rupee Count: Displays your current Rupee total. Always keep an eye on this, especially when saving up for expensive item purchases from Ravio's Shop or upgrades from Mother Maiamai.
