Boss Rush/Challenge Mode
For those seeking to truly test their mastery of Termina's darkest foes, the Boss Rush offers a gauntlet of all four main dungeon bosses. This mode is unlocked after you have defeated Majora's Mask for the first time. To access it, play the Song of Time to reset the three-day cycle, then head to the Moon. Instead of entering the final confrontation, speak to the four children wearing the masks of the dungeon bosses. Each child represents a boss challenge. Defeating all four will earn you the Fierce Deity Mask, a powerful item that transforms Link into a formidable warrior, essential for the true final boss fight.
Preparation is Key
Before embarking on the Boss Rush, thorough preparation is paramount. Unlike the main game, you won't have the luxury of returning to Clock Town for supplies between battles. Stock up on these crucial items:
- Bottled Potions: At least three Red Potions are recommended for emergency health recovery. You can purchase these at the Clock Town Trading Post or from the Deku Scrub in the Southern Swamp.
- Magic Beans: While not directly used in combat, having a few Magic Beans can be useful for reaching hidden areas or chests in the boss arenas if you missed them during your initial playthrough, though this is less critical for the Boss Rush itself.
- Arrows: Max out your quiver (50 arrows). Many bosses are vulnerable to arrows, especially during specific phases.
- Bombs/Bombchus: A full stock of 30 Bombs or Bombchus is highly recommended. Bombchus are particularly effective for certain boss weaknesses due to their ability to travel along surfaces.
- Great Fairy's Sword: If you've collected all 15 Stray Fairies from each dungeon, you'll have obtained the Great Fairy's Sword. This two-handed weapon deals immense damage and can significantly shorten boss encounters.
- Double Defense: If you've completed the Great Fairy's Fountain in Snowhead, you'll have permanent Double Defense, halving all incoming damage. This is invaluable.
- Heart Pieces: Maximize your heart containers. More health means more room for error.
Boss Strategies
Odolwa (Woodfall Temple)
The first challenge comes from the giant insectoid warrior, Odolwa. He's a relatively straightforward fight, but can be dangerous if you're not careful.
- Strategy: As Deku Link, use the Deku Flowers to launch yourself into the air and drop Deku Nuts on his head. This will stun him. Switch back to normal Link and unleash a flurry of sword attacks, ideally with the Great Fairy's Sword. Alternatively, as normal Link, use arrows to hit the jewel on his head, stunning him for close-range attacks. Be wary of his sword swings and fire attacks.
- Recommended Items: Deku Nuts, Arrows, Great Fairy's Sword.
Goht (Snowhead Temple)
Goht, the massive mechanical bull, requires speed and precision.
- Strategy: Transform into Goron Link and roll after Goht, using your spiked roll to damage him. Aim for his legs and body. When he falls, switch to normal Link and attack his head with your sword or arrows. Be mindful of the falling icicles and electric attacks he unleashes. Using the Stone Mask can make it easier to avoid his attacks if you're struggling, as he won't target you as readily.
- Recommended Items: Goron Mask, Arrows, Great Fairy's Sword.
Gyorg (Great Bay Temple)
The aquatic beast Gyorg presents a unique challenge, primarily fought as Zora Link.
- Strategy: As Zora Link, use your electric barrier to stun Gyorg when he surfaces. Once stunned, quickly swim to him and attack with your Zora Boomerangs. When he retreats underwater, use your electric barrier to protect yourself from his charges and wait for him to surface again. If you fall into the water below the platform, quickly swim back up to avoid being eaten. Arrows can also be used to hit his eye when he's stunned.
- Recommended Items: Zora Mask, Zora Boomerangs, Arrows.
Twinmold (Stone Tower Temple)
The colossal Twinmold, two giant sandworms, is the final and most complex boss of the main dungeons.
- Strategy: This fight is best approached with the Giant's Mask. As Giant Link, target the red Twinmold first. Attack its head or tail with your enlarged sword. The blue Twinmold is more aggressive; focus on dodging its attacks while you deal with the red one. Once the red Twinmold is defeated, focus entirely on the blue one. Alternatively, without the Giant's Mask, you can use arrows to hit their eyes, stunning them for sword attacks, but this is significantly more challenging.
- Recommended Items: Giant's Mask (highly recommended), Arrows, Great Fairy's Sword.
Rewards
Successfully defeating all four bosses in the Boss Rush will grant you the Fierce Deity Mask. This powerful mask transforms Link into a god-like warrior with an immense sword that shoots energy beams. While it consumes magic, it makes the final battle against Majora's Mask significantly easier. Remember, the Boss Rush can be replayed as many times as you like, allowing you to practice your strategies and enjoy the challenge.
