From the smallest Deku Baba to the most imposing Iron Knuckle, learn their weaknesses, exploit their patterns, and emerge victorious.
Understanding Enemy Types and General Strategies
Before diving into specific encounters, it's crucial to understand some overarching principles for combat in Ocarina of Time:
- Z-Targeting: Always utilize Z-Targeting (or L-Targeting on the 3DS) to lock onto enemies. This allows for precise attacks, defensive maneuvers, and keeps the camera focused on the action.
- Shield Usage: Your Hylian Shield (or Deku Shield for earlier encounters) is invaluable. Many projectiles and even some physical attacks can be blocked, creating openings for counter-attacks.
- Spin Attack: A charged Spin Attack (hold B, then release) can hit multiple enemies or deal significant damage to a single foe. The standard Spin Attack (rotate the control stick 360 degrees and press B) is quicker for crowd control.
- Ranged Attacks: The Fairy Slingshot, Bow, and Hookshot/Longshot are essential for dealing with enemies from a distance, especially those out of reach or with projectile attacks.
- Magic Spells: Din's Fire, Farore's Wind, and Nayru's Love each have combat applications. Din's Fire is excellent for clearing groups of weak enemies or hitting foes with elemental weaknesses.
Common Enemies and Their Demise
Deku Baba
These carnivorous plants are often found in forested areas like the Kokiri Forest and the Lost Woods. They come in two varieties: the standard Deku Baba and the larger Big Deku Baba.
- Location: Kokiri Forest, Lost Woods, Deku Tree.
- Strategy (Standard):
- Approach cautiously.
- Wait for it to lunge forward.
- As it retracts, quickly slash with your Kokiri Sword (or Master Sword).
- Alternatively, a single projectile from your Fairy Slingshot will stun it, allowing for a quick sword strike.
- Strategy (Big Deku Baba):
- These require more hits. Use the same lunge-and-retract strategy.
- After defeating the plant, the stem remains. Slash the stem again to destroy it completely and prevent it from regrowing.
- Drops: Deku Nuts, Deku Sticks.
Gohma Larva
These small, spider-like creatures are the offspring of Queen Gohma and are encountered primarily within the Deku Tree dungeon.
- Location: Inside the Deku Tree.
- Strategy:
- These larvae drop from the ceiling. Observe their shadow to anticipate their landing spot.
- As they descend, quickly target them with your Fairy Slingshot and fire a Deku Seed. This will stun them.
- Immediately follow up with a sword slash to defeat them.
- If they land and start crawling, a single sword slash is usually enough.
- Drops: Deku Seeds.
Keese
Bat-like creatures that fly erratically, often found in caves and dungeons. Some varieties are imbued with elemental properties.
- Location: Dodongo's Cavern, Forest Temple, Fire Temple, Shadow Temple, Spirit Temple, Gerudo's Fortress, Ice Cavern.
- Strategy (Standard Keese):
- Z-Target them as they fly.
- Wait for them to swoop down towards you.
- Strike with your sword as they get close, or use your Fairy Slingshot/Bow for a ranged takedown.
- Strategy (Fire Keese):
- These are engulfed in flames and will set you on fire if they touch you.
- Use your Fairy Slingshot or Bow to defeat them from a distance.
- Alternatively, a well-timed Spin Attack can hit them without taking damage if you're careful.
- Strategy (Ice Keese):
- Found in the Ice Cavern, these will freeze you on contact.
- Similar to Fire Keese, ranged attacks are your safest bet. The Bow is particularly effective here.
- Drops: Recovery Hearts, Deku Seeds (rarely).
Stalfos
Undead skeletal warriors, often wielding large swords and shields. They are formidable opponents, especially in groups.
- Location: Forest Temple, Shadow Temple, Bottom of the Well, Gerudo Training Ground.
- Strategy:
- Defense First: Stalfos are aggressive. Block their sword swings with your Hylian Shield.
- Counter-Attack: After blocking an attack, they will often be momentarily vulnerable. This is your chance to strike with your Master Sword.
- Jump Attack: A well-timed Jump Attack (Z-Target + A) can deal significant damage and often knock them down.
- Bomb Strategy: If you have Bombs, throwing one near a Stalfos can stun them and break their guard, allowing for easy follow-up attacks.
- Spin Attack: A charged Spin Attack can be effective if you can land it without taking damage.
- Multiple Stalfos: If facing two Stalfos, focus on one at a time. Keep moving to avoid being surrounded. Din's Fire can be very useful here to damage both simultaneously.
- Drops: Recovery Hearts, Rupees.
Poe
Ghostly figures that appear in various locations, particularly in Hyrule Field at night and in certain dungeons.
- Location: Hyrule Field (night), Forest Temple, Shadow Temple, Spirit Temple.
- Strategy (Standard Poe):
- Poes are intangible until they manifest to attack.
- Z-Target them as they appear.
- When they materialize, quickly strike with your sword. They will often disappear after one hit.
- Repeat this process until they are defeated.
- The Bow can also be used for a quick hit if you have good aim.
- Strategy (Big Poe - Hyrule Field):
- These rare Poes only appear in specific spots in Hyrule Field when you are riding Epona.
- As you ride past their spawn point, they will appear. Immediately turn around and chase them.
- Use your Bow to shoot them three times while on horseback. This can be tricky due to their evasive movements.
- If you defeat a Big Poe, collect the Poe Soul in an Empty Bottle. These can be sold to the Poe Collector in Hyrule Castle Town Market (as an adult) for a hefty sum of Rupees.
- Drops: Recovery Hearts, Poe Souls (Big Poe).
