Bestiary/Enemy Guide
Welcome, brave hero, to the comprehensive Bestiary for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time! This section will equip you with the knowledge and strategies needed to overcome Hyrule's most formidable foes, from the lowliest Deku Baba to the most menacing Darknut. Understanding enemy patterns and weaknesses is crucial for survival and efficient dungeon crawling. Remember to always Z-Target (or L-Target on 3DS) for optimal combat!
Common Foes & Early Game Encounters
Deku Baba
- Location: Kokiri Forest, Deku Tree, Lost Woods, Forest Temple.
- Description: Plant-like enemies that emerge from the ground. They come in two varieties: small and large.
- Strategy:
- Small Deku Baba: A single slash from your Kokiri Sword (or Master Sword later on) will dispatch them.
- Large Deku Baba: These require two hits. The first hit will sever their head, which then falls to the ground. Quickly strike the head a second time before it disappears to collect a Deku Nut or Deku Stick. Alternatively, a well-aimed Slingshot shot can stun them, allowing for easy sword strikes.
- Drops: Deku Nuts, Deku Sticks.
Gohma Larva
- Location: Inside the Great Deku Tree.
- Description: Small, spider-like creatures that drop from the ceiling or crawl on walls. They have a single, vulnerable eye.
- Strategy:
- On the Ground: A single sword slash is usually enough.
- On the Ceiling/Walls: Use your Slingshot to hit their eye. They will fall to the ground, allowing for a quick sword finish.
- Drops: Deku Nuts, Recovery Hearts.
Keese
- Location: Dodongo's Cavern, Bottom of the Well, Shadow Temple, Fire Temple, Gerudo Training Ground.
- Description: Bat-like creatures that fly erratically. Some are engulfed in flames (Fire Keese) or ice (Ice Keese).
- Strategy:
- Regular Keese: Z-Target and use a jumping attack with your sword, or shoot them down with your Slingshot/Fairy Bow.
- Fire Keese: These will ignite Link if they touch him. Use your Slingshot/Fairy Bow from a distance. If you're out of ammo, a well-timed sword slash can work, but be cautious.
- Ice Keese: Similar to Fire Keese, but they will freeze Link. Again, ranged attacks are preferred.
- Drops: Recovery Hearts, Deku Nuts (rarely).
Mid-Game Menaces & Dungeon Dwellers
Stalfos
- Location: Forest Temple, Bottom of the Well, Shadow Temple, Gerudo Training Ground.
- Description: Skeletal warriors wielding swords and shields. They are agile and can block attacks.
- Strategy:
- Basic Stalfos: Z-Target and wait for them to attack. Block their strike with your Hylian Shield (or Mirror Shield later), then counter with a jumping attack or a series of quick slashes. Alternatively, use a Deku Nut to stun them, then attack.
- Multiple Stalfos: When facing two or more, focus on one at a time. Keep moving to avoid being surrounded. The Spin Attack can be useful for hitting multiple targets.
- Drops: Recovery Hearts, Rupees.
Lizalfos/Dinalfos
- Location: Dodongo's Cavern (Lizalfos), Spirit Temple (Dinalfos).
- Description: Reptilian humanoids that are quick and wield swords. Lizalfos are green, Dinalfos are red and more powerful.
- Strategy:
- One-on-One: These enemies are often encountered in pairs, but when alone, they are manageable. Z-Target and wait for them to jump or lunge. Dodge their attack and immediately counter with a jumping attack. They often retreat after a hit, so be ready to follow up.
- Two at a Time: This is where they become tricky. Focus on one at a time. Use your shield to block their attacks and try to separate them. The Hookshot/Longshot can stun one, giving you a chance to deal with the other. Bombs or Bombchus can also be effective for area damage.
- Drops: Recovery Hearts, Rupees.
Like Like
- Location: Water Temple, Spirit Temple, Ganon's Castle.
- Description: Blob-like creatures that can swallow Link whole and steal his shield or tunic.
- Strategy:
- Prevention is Key: Avoid being swallowed at all costs! Keep your distance.
- Attack Pattern: They extend their body to grab you. When they do, hit them with your sword or a ranged weapon.
- Retrieving Items: If swallowed, rapidly mash buttons to escape. If they steal your Hylian Shield or Goron Tunic, you must defeat them to retrieve it. If you have the Mirror Shield, they cannot steal it.
- Recommended Weapons: Master Sword, Biggoron's Sword, Hookshot/Longshot, Fairy Bow.
- Drops: Recovery Hearts, Rupees.
Late Game Terrors & Boss Minions
Iron Knuckle
- Location: Spirit Temple, Ganon's Castle, Gerudo Training Ground.
- Description: Heavily armored, slow but incredibly powerful knights. Their attacks deal massive damage.
- Strategy:
- Patience and Precision: This is not a fight to rush. Z-Target and keep your distance.
- Attack Windows: Wait for them to swing their axe. After their attack, they will be briefly vulnerable. Dodge their swing (backflip or side hop) and immediately run in for 1-2 sword strikes. Retreat quickly before they recover.
- Exploiting Weaknesses:
- Bombs/Bombchus: Can be used to stun them, creating an opening.
- Din's Fire: An excellent way to deal significant damage and knock off their armor quickly.
- Biggoron's Sword: Deals more damage per hit, shortening the fight.
- Armor Removal: As you damage them, pieces of their armor will break off, revealing a more agile (but still dangerous) foe. The strategy remains largely the same, but they move faster.
- Drops: Recovery Hearts, Rupees.
Darknut
- Location: Ganon's Castle.
- Description: Similar to Iron Knuckles but even more formidable. They are heavily armored and wield large swords.
- Strategy:
- Similar to Iron Knuckle, but harder: The core strategy is the same: wait for an opening after their attack.
- Spin Attack Advantage: A well-timed Spin Attack (charged) can often knock off a piece of their armor.
- Magic Usage: Din's Fire is highly effective. Nayru's Love can provide temporary invincibility, allowing you to get more hits in.
- Master Sword & Biggoron's Sword: Use your strongest sword. The Biggoron's Sword is particularly effective due to its damage output.
- Drops: Recovery Hearts, Rupees.
