Boss Rush Mode

Welcome, brave hero, to the ultimate test of your courage and skill: the Boss Rush Mode! This challenging gauntlet pits you against every major boss from your journey through Hyrule, back-to-back, with limited resources. There's no rest for the weary, only glory for the triumphant!

Unlocking Boss Rush

To unlock the Boss Rush Mode, you must first complete the main story of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Once Ganon has been defeated and peace restored to Hyrule, a new option will appear on the title screen, allowing you to embark on this epic challenge.

Preparation is Key

Unlike the main quest, you begin Boss Rush Mode with a fixed set of items and health. There are no opportunities to collect additional hearts, magic jars, or item refills between battles. Therefore, understanding your starting inventory and conserving resources is paramount.

  • Starting Health: You will begin with 20 Heart Containers (your maximum from the main game).
  • Magic Meter: Your Magic Meter will be full.
  • Items: You will have access to all major items acquired during the main quest, including the Master Sword, Hylian Shield, Hookshot/Longshot, Fairy Bow, Megaton Hammer, Lens of Truth, Ocarina of Time, and all three elemental spells (Din's Fire, Farore's Wind, Nayru's Love).
  • Consumables: You will start with a limited supply of arrows and bombs. Use them wisely!
  • Bottles: You will have all four Bottles, each pre-filled with a Red Potion. These are your only means of healing during the rush, so save them for critical moments.

General Strategies for Success

  • Know Your Enemy: Review the boss strategies from the main walkthrough. Each boss has a specific weakness and attack pattern. Exploit these relentlessly.
  • Conserve Magic: Din's Fire and Nayru's Love consume significant magic. Only use them when absolutely necessary, such as for quick damage or to avoid a devastating attack. Farore's Wind is generally not useful in a boss rush setting.
  • Z-Targeting: Always utilize Z-Targeting to maintain focus on the boss and execute precise attacks.
  • Dodge and Weave: Learn the bosses' attack tells and practice dodging. Taking unnecessary damage will quickly deplete your limited healing resources.
  • Master Sword is Your Friend: For most bosses, the Master Sword will be your primary damage dealer. Practice your sword combos and spin attacks.
  • Don't Rush (Unless You Have To): While it's a "Boss Rush," don't feel pressured to defeat each boss as quickly as possible if it means taking excessive damage. Patience often leads to a cleaner victory.

Boss Order and Specific Tactics

The bosses appear in a fixed order, generally mirroring their appearance in the main story. Below are quick refreshers and specific tips for each encounter:

1. Queen Gohma (Deku Tree)

  • Strategy: As Young Link, use your Slingshot to stun her eye when it's red. As Adult Link, use the Fairy Bow. Drop a Deku Nut or a Bomb when she's stunned, then slash with your sword.
  • Key Item: Slingshot (Young Link), Fairy Bow (Adult Link), Bombs/Deku Nuts.
  • Boss Rush Tip: This is an easy warm-up. Conserve arrows and bombs if possible.

2. King Dodongo (Dodongo's Cavern)

  • Strategy: Wait for him to inhale, then toss a Bomb into his mouth. He'll roll around; avoid him. Repeat.
  • Key Item: Bombs.
  • Boss Rush Tip: You have plenty of bombs. Don't be shy, but ensure your timing is precise to avoid wasting them.

3. Barinade (Jabu-Jabu's Belly)

  • Strategy: First, detach the tentacles with your Boomerang. Then, target the main body with your Boomerang to stun it, and attack with your sword. Finally, when it spins, use the Boomerang to stun it again and attack the core.
  • Key Item: Boomerang, Sword.
  • Boss Rush Tip: This fight requires careful targeting. Focus on detaching the tentacles quickly to minimize damage.

4. Phantom Ganon (Forest Temple)

  • Strategy: Ride Epona to avoid his attacks in the painting room. When he emerges, reflect his energy ball with your sword. Once he falls, attack with your sword. Repeat.
  • Key Item: Master Sword.
  • Boss Rush Tip: The energy ball reflection can be tricky. Practice your timing. If you're struggling, Nayru's Love can provide a temporary shield.

5. Volvagia (Fire Temple)

  • Strategy: When Volvagia emerges from a lava hole, hit its head with the Megaton Hammer. While stunned, attack with your Master Sword. Avoid its fire breath and falling rocks.
  • Key Item: Megaton Hammer, Master Sword.
  • Boss Rush Tip: The Megaton Hammer is crucial here. Get close quickly after it emerges to land the stun hit.

6. Morpha (Water Temple)

  • Strategy: Use the Longshot to grab Morpha's nucleus when it's exposed. Pull it onto the platform and slash with your Master Sword. Retreat to avoid its tentacle attacks.
  • Key Item: Longshot, Master Sword.
  • Boss Rush Tip: This fight can be frustrating if you get caught by the tentacles. Stay mobile and only approach when the nucleus is vulnerable.

7. Bongo Bongo (Shadow Temple)

  • Strategy: Use the Lens of Truth to see Bongo Bongo. Shoot its hands with arrows to stun them. Then, use the Hookshot/Longshot to cross to the center and hit its eye with your Master Sword.
  • Key Item: Lens of Truth, Fairy Bow, Hookshot/Longshot, Master Sword.
  • Boss Rush Tip: Managing the Lens of Truth's magic consumption is important. Only activate it when you need to aim at the hands. Din's Fire can also damage the hands if you're close.

8. Twinrova (Spirit Temple)

  • Strategy: Reflect the elemental attacks (fire or ice) from one witch to the other. Once one witch is hit by her sister's element three times, she will merge. Then, absorb the elemental attacks with your Mirror Shield until it's charged, and unleash it on Twinrova.
  • Key Item: Mirror Shield, Master Sword.
  • Boss Rush Tip: The first phase requires precise aiming with your shield. In the second phase, ensure you're absorbing the correct element (opposite of what Twinrova is casting) to charge your shield effectively.

9. Ganondorf (Ganon's Castle)

  • Strategy: Reflect his energy balls with your Master Sword. When he's stunned, shoot a Light Arrow at him, then use the Hookshot/Longshot to reach him and attack with your Master Sword. Repeat.
  • Key Item: Master Sword, Light Arrows, Hookshot/Longshot.
  • Boss Rush Tip: This is a long fight. Conserve your Light Arrows for when he's truly vulnerable. Nayru's Love can be a lifesaver if you're having trouble with the energy ball reflections.

10. Ganon (Ganon's Castle)

  • Strategy: This is the final form. First, use Light Arrows to stun him, then attack his tail with the Master Sword. Once the Master Sword is knocked away, use the Megaton Hammer to stun him, then roll between his legs to attack his tail with the Biggoron's Sword (if you have it) or your remaining weapons. Finally, retrieve the Master Sword and deliver the final blow.
  • Key Item: Light Arrows, Master Sword, Megaton Hammer, Biggoron's Sword (optional).
  • Boss Rush Tip: This is the most challenging fight. Don't be afraid to use your remaining Red Potions here. Focus on stunning Ganon to create openings for attacking his vulnerable tail. If you have the Biggoron's Sword, it makes the second phase significantly easier.

Good luck, hero! May the Triforce be with you as you conquer the Boss Rush Mode!
