Boss Rush/Hero's Cave

Welcome, brave hero, to the ultimate challenge in Holodrum! The Boss Rush, also known as the Hero's Cave, is a post-game gauntlet designed to test your mastery of combat against all eight main dungeon bosses. This isn't just for bragging rights; successfully completing this challenge is crucial for obtaining the best rings and for a linked game playthrough.

Location: The Hero's Cave is located in the Western Coast area, specifically in the screen directly west of the Sunken City entrance. You'll find a cave entrance blocked by a large rock. To access it, you must have completed all eight dungeons and defeated Onox. Use the Power Bracelet to lift the rock and enter.

Preparation is Key

Before you even think about stepping into the Hero's Cave, ensure you are fully prepared. This means:

  • Full Heart Containers: Max out your health. Every heart counts.
  • Magic Meter: A full magic meter is essential for certain items.
  • Bombs: Carry the maximum amount (30).
  • Mystery Seeds: Stock up on these for the Seed Shooter or Slingshot.
  • Scent Seeds: Useful for distracting certain bosses.
  • Gale Seeds: Can be used for quick dodges.
  • Rings: Equip your best combat rings. The Red Ring (doubles sword damage) and Blue Ring (halves damage taken) are highly recommended. The Power Ring L-2 or L-3 can also be excellent choices.
  • Potions: Always carry at least one Potion for emergency healing.
  • Fairy in a Bottle: If you have one, a fairy will revive you if you fall, giving you a second chance.

Boss Order and Strategies

The bosses appear in a fixed order, mimicking their dungeon appearance. You will face them one after another with no breaks or opportunities to heal between fights, other than what you bring with you or what drops from the bosses themselves (which is rare).

1. Aquamentus (Dungeon 1: Gnarled Root Dungeon)

  • Strategy: Aquamentus is straightforward. Equip your Sword and stand directly in front of him. When he opens his mouth to shoot fireballs, quickly slash his horn. Dodge the fireballs by moving left or right. Repeat until defeated.
  • Recommended Items: Sword.

2. Dodongo (Dungeon 2: Snake's Remains)

  • Strategy: Dodongo is vulnerable to Bombs. Wait for him to open his mouth, then toss a Bomb inside. He'll then run around erratically. Avoid his charges and his fire breath. Repeat the bomb-feeding process until he's defeated.
  • Recommended Items: Bombs.

3. Mothula (Dungeon 3: Poison Moth's Lair)

  • Strategy: Mothula flies around the room, occasionally dropping smaller moths. Use your Sword to hit it whenever it swoops down. The Boomerang can also stun it, allowing for easier sword hits. Be mindful of the poisonous floor if you fall.
  • Recommended Items: Sword, Boomerang.

4. Gohma (Dungeon 4: Dancing Dragon Dungeon)

  • Strategy: Gohma's weakness is its eye. When it opens its eye, use your Slingshot or Seed Shooter with Mystery Seeds to hit it. After a few hits, it will start to charge. Dodge its charges and continue hitting its eye when it opens.
  • Recommended Items: Slingshot or Seed Shooter with Mystery Seeds.

5. Digdogger (Dungeon 5: Unicorn's Cave)

  • Strategy: Digdogger starts as a large spiked ball. Use the Magnetic Gloves (North Pole) to pull it towards a spiked wall, or the South Pole to push it away. Once it hits a wall, it will split into smaller Digdoggers. Use the Sword to defeat the smaller ones. Repeat until all are gone.
  • Recommended Items: Magnetic Gloves, Sword.

6. Manhandla (Dungeon 6: Ancient Ruins)

  • Strategy: Manhandla has four mouths, each vulnerable to a Bomb. Place Bombs near its mouths as it moves. Once all four mouths are destroyed, its core will be exposed. Hit the core with your Sword. Be quick, as the mouths regenerate.
  • Recommended Items: Bombs, Sword.

7. Medusa Head (Dungeon 7: Explorer's Crypt)

  • Strategy: The Medusa Head floats around, occasionally shooting fireballs or trying to petrify you. Its weakness is its exposed eye. Use the Roc's Feather to jump over its attacks and get close enough to hit its eye with your Sword. The Seed Shooter with Mystery Seeds can also hit it from a distance.
  • Recommended Items: Sword, Roc's Feather, Seed Shooter with Mystery Seeds.

8. Plasmarine (Dungeon 8: Sword & Shield Maze)

  • Strategy: Plasmarine floats in the water. Use the Hookshot to pull yourself across the water to the platforms. When Plasmarine is visible, hit it with your Sword. It will then dive and reappear. Repeat this process. Watch out for its electric attacks.
  • Recommended Items: Sword, Hookshot.

Rewards

Upon successfully defeating all eight bosses, you will be rewarded with a special Ring. This ring is usually one of the more powerful or unique rings in the game, often the GBA Nature Ring if playing on a Game Boy Advance, or another rare ring like the Cursed Ring or Red Ring if you don't already possess it. The specific ring can vary based on your current ring collection. Additionally, completing the Hero's Cave is a requirement for certain secrets and unlocks in a linked game.

Good luck, hero! May your sword be sharp and your aim true!
