Ring Appraisal & Management
Rings in Oracle of Seasons provide several passive benefits, from increased defense to unique abilities. However, to use them, they must first be appraised and then equipped. This section will guide you through the process of appraising, managing, and effectively using your ring collection.
Finding and Appraising Rings
Rings are found throughout Holodrum in various ways:
- Chests: Many dungeons and overworld locations contain chests with rings.
- Gasha Nuts: Planting Gasha Seeds in soft soil spots will grow Gasha Trees. These trees often yield rings, especially as you progress further into the game. The quality of the ring can sometimes depend on the location of the Gasha spot.
- Enemy Drops: Certain enemies have a rare chance to drop rings upon defeat.
- Linked Game Secrets: In a Linked Game (playing Oracle of Ages after Oracle of Seasons, or vice versa), you can receive special rings via secrets from the other game.
- Subrosian Dance Hall: Winning the dance mini-game in the Subrosian Dance Hall can sometimes reward you with a ring.
- Trading Sequence: The lengthy trading sequence can lead to obtaining specific rings.
Once you acquire a ring, it will appear as an "Unknown Ring" in your inventory. To discover its properties, you must visit the Ring Shop in Subrosia. The shop is located in the central part of Subrosia Village, easily identifiable by its ring-shaped sign.
- Travel to Subrosia: Use a Subrosian Portal (e.g., the one near the Hero's Cave entrance in Horon Village) to reach Subrosia.
- Locate the Ring Shop: Head to the main square of Subrosia Village.
- Speak to the Subrosian Shopkeeper: He will offer to appraise your Unknown Rings for a fee of 20 Rupees each.
- Appraise Your Rings: Select the "Appraise" option and choose the Unknown Ring you wish to identify. The shopkeeper will reveal its name and effect.
Equipping and Managing Rings
After appraisal, rings are stored in your Ring Box. You can carry a maximum of 20 rings in your Ring Box at any given time. If you find a new ring and your box is full, you'll be prompted to discard an existing ring to make space.
To equip a ring:
- Open Your Inventory: Press the START button.
- Navigate to the Ring Box: Select the Ring Box icon (it looks like a small chest).
- Choose a Ring: Highlight the appraised ring you wish to equip.
- Select "Equip": The ring will now be active, and its effect will apply to Link.
You can only equip one ring at a time. Experiment with different rings to find the ones most beneficial for your current situation or playstyle. For example, the Red Ring (increases sword damage) is excellent for combat, while the GBA Time Ring (reduces damage taken) is useful for challenging areas.
Notable Rings and Their Locations/Strategies
Here are a few key rings and tips for obtaining them:
- Power Ring L-1: Often found early in the game from Gasha Nuts or dungeon chests. Increases sword damage slightly.
- Defense Ring L-1: Similar to the Power Ring, found early. Reduces damage taken slightly.
- Red Ring: Significantly increases sword damage. Often found in later dungeons or as a rare Gasha Nut drop. Prioritize this for boss fights.
- Blue Ring: Significantly reduces damage taken. Also found in later dungeons or as a rare Gasha Nut drop. Excellent for difficult areas or when you're low on hearts.
- Cursed Ring: A unique ring that doubles your sword damage but also doubles the damage you take. Found in a chest in the Ancient Ruins (Dungeon 7). Use with extreme caution!
- Toss Ring: Increases the distance you can throw items. Useful for puzzles involving throwing objects across gaps. Often a reward from the Subrosian Dance Hall or a Gasha Nut.
- Maple's Ring: Increases the chance of Maple appearing after defeating enemies. This is invaluable for collecting items and rupees. You'll typically receive this from Maple herself after a certain number of collisions.
- Gasha Ring: Increases the chance of finding better items from Gasha Nuts. A must-have if you're farming rings or other Gasha rewards. Often found as a Gasha Nut drop itself.
- Peace Ring: Prevents enemies from attacking you unless you attack them first. Great for exploring or navigating dangerous areas without interruption. Can be a reward from the Subrosian Dance Hall or a Gasha Nut.
Remember to regularly check your Ring Box and appraise any new "Unknown Rings." The right ring can make a significant difference in your adventure through Holodrum!
