Force Gems & Spirit Gems
Beyond the main quest, *Phantom Hourglass* offers a wealth of hidden treasures that can significantly enhance Link's abilities and aid him in his perilous journey across the Great Sea. Among the most valuable of these are Force Gems and Spirit Gems. While both are crucial for progression and power-ups, they serve distinct purposes.
Force Gems: Powering the Phantom Hourglass
Force Gems are directly tied to the titular Phantom Hourglass. Collecting these shimmering crystals increases the amount of time Link can spend within the Temple of the Ocean King before the Hourglass's sand runs out and he takes damage. Each Force Gem adds a small, but vital, increment to your timer. The more Force Gems you collect, the longer you can explore the Temple's cursed halls, allowing for more thorough exploration, puzzle-solving, and treasure hunting without the constant pressure of the ticking clock.
Where to Find Force Gems:
- Dungeon Chests: Many dungeons contain Force Gems as rewards for solving complex puzzles or defeating mini-bosses. Always be on the lookout for hidden chests!
- Island Exploration: Some islands in the Great Sea hide Force Gems in plain sight or behind environmental puzzles. Use your Boomerang, Bombs, and other tools to uncover secrets.
- Side Quests: Certain NPCs may reward Link with Force Gems for completing their requests. For example, the Postman often has valuable information or rewards for dedicated explorers.
- Beating Bosses: While not always a direct drop, defeating a dungeon boss often unlocks access to areas containing Force Gems or provides a path to a new island where they can be found.
Strategy for Collecting Force Gems:
Prioritize collecting Force Gems, especially early in the game. The increased time in the Temple of the Ocean King will make subsequent visits much less stressful. Don't be afraid to revisit islands or dungeons after acquiring new items, as previously inaccessible areas might now yield a Force Gem.
Spirit Gems: Enhancing Link's Attributes
Spirit Gems, unlike Force Gems, directly upgrade Link's core attributes: Attack and Defense. There are two types of Spirit Gems:
- Power Gems (Red): These gems enhance Link's attack power, allowing him to deal more damage to enemies.
- Courage Gems (Green): These gems boost Link's defense, reducing the amount of damage he takes from enemy attacks.
For every ten Power Gems you collect, Link's attack power increases by one point. Similarly, every ten Courage Gems collected will increase Link's defense by one point. These upgrades are permanent and invaluable for tackling tougher enemies and bosses.
Where to Find Spirit Gems:
- Defeating Enemies: Many common enemies, particularly stronger variants or those found in dungeons, have a chance to drop Spirit Gems upon defeat. Grind strategically in areas with high enemy density.
- Mini-Bosses: Mini-bosses within dungeons are almost guaranteed to drop a handful of Spirit Gems, making them excellent targets for farming.
- Hidden Areas: Use your Bombchus or Bombs to reveal cracked walls and floors, often leading to small rooms containing Spirit Gems.
- Digging Spots: Keep an eye out for suspicious patches of ground or X-marks on your map. Using your Shovel in these locations can unearth Spirit Gems.
- Fishing: Believe it or not, some rare fish caught with the Fishing Rod can yield Spirit Gems! It's a slower method, but a relaxing way to gather them.
- Treasure Maps: Following treasure maps can sometimes lead to chests containing a significant number of Spirit Gems.
Strategy for Collecting Spirit Gems:
While Force Gems are about progression, Spirit Gems are about making that progression easier. Don't hesitate to spend a little time "grinding" for Spirit Gems if you find yourself struggling with a particular dungeon or boss. A few extra points in Attack or Defense can make a world of difference. Remember to check your inventory regularly to see how close you are to your next upgrade!
