Story & Lore
Welcome, hero, to the comprehensive guide to the rich narrative and deep lore of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. This section will walk you through the game's pivotal story moments, explain the significance of key items, and delve into the history and mythology that shape Hyrule and the Twilight Realm.
The Call to Adventure: Ordon Village & Faron Woods
Your journey begins in the peaceful, pastoral setting of Ordon Village. Link, a humble ranch hand, is tasked with delivering a gift to Hyrule Castle. This seemingly simple errand quickly unravels into a grand quest when the village children are abducted by shadowy creatures, and Link is dragged into the encroaching Twilight.
- Initial Steps:
- Deliver the Sword to Rusl: After a brief tutorial on basic controls and herding goats, Rusl will ask you to retrieve his Ordon Sword from the Watermill.
- Retrieve the Slingshot: Talo, one of the village children, will challenge you to hit a target. Successfully hitting the target will earn you the Slingshot.
- Fishing with Rod: Learn to fish with Rod, obtaining the Fishing Rod and Bee Larva. This is crucial for later side quests and obtaining Rupees.
- Saving Ilia: When Ilia's horse, Epona, is injured, you'll need to fetch the Wooden Sword from Link's house to clear the path to the forest.
- First Encounter with Twilight: As you escort the children through Faron Woods, a monstrous creature will attack. Link is knocked unconscious and awakens in a strange, shadowy form.
- Meeting Midna: In your Wolf form, you'll be imprisoned in a cell. A mysterious imp, Midna, will appear and offer to help you escape. Follow her instructions to navigate the sewers beneath Hyrule Castle.
The Shadow Beasts and the Tears of Light
As Wolf Link, your primary objective is to restore light to the regions consumed by Twilight. This involves collecting Tears of Light from various Insect-like Shadow Beasts. Each region requires a specific number of Tears to dispel the darkness.
Faron Province Restoration
Your first task as Wolf Link, guided by Midna, is to restore the light to the Faron Province. This involves defeating Shadow Beasts and collecting 16 Tears of Light.
- Key Locations & Strategies:
- Faron Woods: The initial area where you transform. You'll find several Shadow Beasts here. Use your Wolf Senses to track them and Midna's Energy Field attack to defeat groups.
- Forest Temple Entrance: As you progress, you'll reach the entrance to the Forest Temple. More Shadow Beasts lurk here.
- Sacred Grove: Eventually, you'll reach the Sacred Grove, where the last few Tears of Light are hidden. You'll need to solve a puzzle involving the Skull Kid to proceed.
- Reward: Once all 16 Tears are collected, the Faron Province will be restored to light, and Link will regain his human form. You will also receive the Faron Province Fused Shadow, a powerful artifact.
The Legend Unfolds: The Fused Shadows and the Mirror of Twilight
Midna reveals that the Twilight has spread across Hyrule, and the land's light spirits have been corrupted. To fully restore Hyrule, you must collect the three fragments of the Fused Shadows, ancient relics of immense power, and ultimately, find the Mirror of Twilight to confront the source of the darkness.
Eldin Province & Goron Mines
After restoring Faron, your next destination is the Eldin Province, home to the Gorons. This region is also shrouded in Twilight.
- Wolf Link Objectives:
- Kakariko Village: Upon entering Eldin, you'll find Kakariko Village overrun by Shadow Beasts. You'll need to rescue Barnes from his shop and then clear the village of enemies.
- Death Mountain Trail: Ascend Death Mountain, facing more Shadow Beasts and environmental hazards.
- Collecting Tears: Similar to Faron, you must collect 16 Tears of Light from the Shadow Beasts scattered throughout Eldin Province and Death Mountain.
- Human Link Objectives (Goron Mines):
- Obtain the Hero's Bow: Inside the Goron Mines, you'll acquire the Hero's Bow, essential for solving puzzles and defeating enemies.
- Iron Boots: The Iron Boots are also found here, allowing you to walk on magnetic ceilings and resist strong currents.
- Boss Battle: Fyrus: At the heart of the Goron Mines, you'll face Fyrus, a massive, fiery beast. Use the Iron Boots to anchor yourself and the Hero's Bow to target his weak point (the gem on his forehead) after pulling his chains with the Iron Boots.
- Reward: Defeating Fyrus grants you the Eldin Province Fused Shadow.
Lanayru Province & Lakebed Temple
The vast Lanayru Province is the final area to be cleansed of Twilight before you can fully pursue the Fused Shadows.
- Wolf Link Objectives:
- Zora's Domain: The Zoras have been frozen solid by the Twilight. You'll need to find a way to melt the ice, typically by pushing a large rock into the hot spring on Death Mountain.
- Lake Hylia: Navigate the expansive Lake Hylia, collecting the 16 Tears of Light. This often involves swimming and using Midna's abilities to reach elevated areas.
- Human Link Objectives (Lakebed Temple):
- Zora Armor: Before entering the temple, you'll need the Zora Armor to breathe underwater. This is typically given to you by Prince Ralis after a series of events in Kakariko Village.
- Clawshot: The Clawshot is a crucial item found within the Lakebed Temple, allowing you to grapple onto specific targets.
- Boss Battle: Morpheel: The final boss of the Lakebed Temple is Morpheel, a giant aquatic creature. Use the Zora Armor to swim freely and the Clawshot to target its eye on its back.
- Reward: Defeating Morpheel yields the Lanayru Province Fused Shadow, completing your collection of these ancient artifacts.
With all three Fused Shadows in your possession, the true threat of Zant and the search for the Mirror of Twilight begins. Your journey will take you to the Gerudo Desert and beyond, uncovering the deeper mysteries of Hyrule's past and the origins of the Twilight Realm.
