Death & Ghosts

Death is an inevitable part of every Sim's life, but it doesn't have to be the end of their story! In The Sims 4, deceased Sims can return as ghosts, adding a unique supernatural element to your gameplay. This guide will walk you through how Sims can die, how to interact with ghosts, and even how to bring them back to life.

Causes of Death

Sims can meet their end in various ways, some mundane, others quite peculiar. Understanding these can help you either avoid or, if you're feeling mischievous, orchestrate a Sim's demise.

  • Old Age: The most common and natural cause. Sims progress through life stages (baby, toddler, child, teen, young adult, adult, elder) and eventually die of old age.
  • Hunger: If a Sim's hunger need drops to zero for an extended period, they will starve. Keep an eye on that hunger bar!
  • Fire: Careless cooking, faulty electronics, or even lightning strikes can cause fires. Sims caught in a blaze for too long will perish. Always have a smoke detector and fire extinguisher handy!
  • Electrocution: Sims with low Handiness skill attempting to repair broken electronics or plumbing can be electrocuted. A second shock is often fatal.
  • Drowning: Sims who are exhausted and swim in a pool for too long, or those who get stuck in a pool without a ladder, can drown.
  • Embarrassment: Extreme embarrassment can lead to death by mortification. This often happens after multiple embarrassing social interactions or accidents.
  • Hysteria: Too much playful interaction or an overwhelming amount of positive emotions can lead to death by hysteria.
  • Rage: Sustained extreme anger can result in death by rage. This is more common in Sims with the Hot-Headed trait.
  • Exertion: Elder Sims who push themselves too hard physically (e.g., WooHoo multiple times, intense exercise) can die from overexertion.
  • Cowplant: The infamous Cowplant (found by fishing, exploring space, or grafting plants) can lure and eat Sims who try to get its milk or cake. If it eats a Sim twice without being fed, the Sim will die.

The Grim Reaper

When a Sim dies, the Grim Reaper appears to collect their soul. During this interaction, other Sims can plead with the Grim Reaper to spare the dying Sim. Success depends on the pleading Sim's relationship with the deceased and their Charisma skill. A successful plea will bring the Sim back to life, often with a "Saved from Death" moodlet.

Becoming a Ghost

If the Grim Reaper takes a Sim's soul, they will become a ghost. Their tombstone or urn will appear on the lot. Ghosts can be added to your household, allowing you to control them and experience their unique ghostly abilities.

Interacting with Ghosts

  • Tombstones/Urns: These objects are crucial. If you delete them, the ghost is gone forever. You can click on them to "Mourn" or "Commune" with the deceased.
  • Adding to Household: To add a ghost to your active household, a living Sim must have a strong relationship with the ghost. Once the relationship is high enough, click on the ghost and select the "Ask to Join Household" interaction.
  • Ghostly Abilities: Each ghost's abilities are tied to their cause of death:
    • Hunger Ghosts: Can possess refrigerators and make food spoil.
    • Fire Ghosts: Can start fires or extinguish them.
    • Electrocution Ghosts: Can possess electronics, causing them to break or become supercharged.
    • Drowning Ghosts: Can leave puddles of water everywhere.
    • Embarrassment Ghosts: Can cause other Sims to feel embarrassed.
    • Hysteria Ghosts: Can make other Sims feel playful.
    • Rage Ghosts: Can make other Sims feel angry.
    • Exertion Ghosts: Can possess objects to make them break or function poorly.
    • Cowplant Ghosts: Can possess plants, making them grow or die.
  • Ghostly Needs: Ghosts still have needs (Hunger, Bladder, Energy, Fun, Social, Hygiene) but they decay much slower. They can fulfill these needs like living Sims.

Bringing Ghosts Back to Life

There are a few ways to resurrect a ghost, allowing them to rejoin the living world as a playable Sim.

  1. Ambrosia: This is the most reliable method. Ambrosia is a special dish that requires high-level cooking and gardening skills.
    • Ingredients: You'll need a Death Flower, an Angelfish, and a Potion of Youth.
    • Death Flower: Can be obtained by grafting plants (e.g., Apple + Cherry = Pomegranate; Snapdragon + Lily = Orchid; Pomegranate + Orchid = Death Flower). Alternatively, Sims with high Logic skill might find them while exploring space in a Rocket Ship.
    • Angelfish: Can be caught by fishing in various locations, often requiring a higher Fishing skill.
    • Potion of Youth: Can be purchased from the Rewards Store for 1,500 Satisfaction Points.
    • Preparation: Once you have all ingredients, a Sim with Level 10 Cooking and Level 10 Gourmet Cooking can prepare Ambrosia on any stove.
    • Resurrection: Have the ghost Sim eat the Ambrosia. They will instantly return to life as a living Sim.
  2. Book of Life: Sims with Level 10 Writing skill can write the "Book of Life" on the "Computer" (under the "Write" category).
    • Writing Process: First, the Sim must "Write the Book of Life" and then "Capture Epic Saga" of another Sim. This creates a unique Book of Life tied to that specific Sim.
    • Resurrection: If the Sim whose epic saga was captured dies, a living Sim can click on the Book of Life and select "Restore Life" to bring them back.

Whether you choose to embrace the spectral side of life or bring your beloved Sims back from the great beyond, understanding death and ghosts adds a rich layer of storytelling to your Sims 4 experience.
