Explore The Sims 4 skills guide, detailing all 18 skills like Charisma, Cooking, and Rocket Science. Learn how to level them up, unlock new actions, and improve your Sim's quality of life and career.

The Sims 4 features 18 distinct skills that your Sims can master. Learning a skill unlocks new actions and improves the quality of related activities. Skill levels can be increased by reading skill books or by performing the skill-related actions. Sims gain a skill level when a progress bar, appearing overhead after reading a book or performing an action, fills up. Having a specific mood can also increase the rate at which skills are leveled.

Each skill has 10 levels. Once a skill reaches level 1, it appears in the Sim's skills tab. Higher skill levels generally unlock new interactions and improve the quality of outcomes, such as catching better fish or mixing superior drinks.

The table below provides a brief overview of each skill:

Details for Individual Skills

Note that because a level-up doesn't always provide a noteworthy benefit, I'll only list a few of the choice level-ups for each skill here that you can use as major goals instead.

Charisma:

Charisma is beneficial for Sims who engage in frequent social interactions, as it improves the rate at which relationships develop. It's advantageous for any Sim, regardless of their traits or career, and since Social Interaction is a fundamental need, it significantly aids your Sim's overall well-being. To level this skill, Sims can practice speaking in front of any mirror. While chatting with other Sims or reading a skill book also increases Charisma, these methods are slower. As Sims level up, more options for practicing in front of the mirror become available. Sims with a Charisma skill level of 5 or higher can establish their own social networks on a computer, allowing them to upload viral videos or images to gain followers, which further enhances skill progression without additional rewards beyond the Charisma increase itself.

  • Level 1: Learn traits of other Sims at a faster rate
  • Level 3: Donate to Online Charity, Practice Pick-up Lines in Mirror
  • Level 5: Start Social Network on Computer
  • Level 7: Ask Sim for a Small Loan
  • Level 9: Ask Sim for a Large Loan
  • Level 10: Upload Viral Video, Call Boss to Negotiate Promotion

Comedy:

Comedy shares similarities with Charisma but offers more direct monetary benefits. Both skills complement each other, making it advantageous to level them concurrently. Sims can eventually perform comedy routines to earn money, and their social interactions become more humorous. Skills that enhance social interaction are beneficial here; choosing the "goofball" trait is recommended. Leveling can begin by writing jokes on a computer, which is most effective when the Sim is in a playful mood (achieved through activities like taking bubble baths). Continued practice unlocks the ability to write and perform comedy routines at a nightclub. The earnings for short, medium, and long routines are fixed at 75, 125, and 200 simoleons, respectively, regardless of skill level. However, the quality of the routine, which can be improved by refining it on a computer (with "Excellent" being the highest tier), can increase earnings.

  • Level 2: Tell Knock Knock Jokes to other Sims
  • Level 3: Compose short routine on computer, Perform short routine on microphone
  • Level 5: Practice Comedy Routine/Refine Comedy Routine
  • Level 6: Compose Medium length versions of routines in Level 3
  • Level 7: Write Comedy Books on Computer
  • Level 8: Composer Long versions of routines in Level 6
  • Level 10: Improvise Routines on a microphone

Cooking:

Cooking is a highly favored skill that enhances the quality of meals. Higher quality meals provide greater satisfaction, induce more positive moodlets, and at the highest level, allow Sims to cook Ambrosia, a dish capable of reviving deceased Sims. Most skill levels introduce new recipes, but the key milestones are detailed below. It's recommended to start cooking when a Sim is inspired, perhaps after a "thoughtful shower." Cooking the most challenging recipes available tends to increase skill level more rapidly. At level 5, Sims gain the ability to cook "gourmet meals" instead of standard ones, making this a significant goal. While skill books can be used, actively cooking is generally a faster method for skill progression.
