Life Stages & Aging

Understanding the life stages and aging process in The Sims 4 is crucial for long-term gameplay and developing rich narratives for your Sims. From the adorable, demanding Infant to the wise, reflective Elder, each stage brings unique challenges, opportunities, and milestones.

Understanding Life Spans

By default, Sims age through various life stages automatically. You can adjust the length of these life spans in the game options:

  • Short: Accelerates aging, ideal for quick playthroughs or legacy challenges focusing on many generations.
  • Normal: The default setting, offering a balanced progression.
  • Long: Extends each life stage significantly, allowing more time to develop skills, careers, and relationships.
  • Epic: An extremely long lifespan, perfect for players who want to maximize every moment with their Sims.
  • Aging Off: You can completely disable aging for played Sims in the game options, allowing them to remain in their current life stage indefinitely. Unplayed Sims will continue to age unless this option is also toggled off.

To access these settings, go to Game Options > Gameplay and locate the "Auto Age (Played Sims)" and "Auto Age (Unplayed Sims)" dropdowns, as well as the "Lifespan" selector.

Aging Up Your Sims

While Sims age automatically, you can also force an age-up at any time. This is particularly useful for moving a Sim into their next life stage when you've completed all your goals for their current one, or if you simply can't wait for them to grow up!

  1. Birthday Cake: The most common and celebratory method.
    • Purchase a "Birthday Cake" from the Baking section of the Build/Buy Mode (Appliances > Small Appliances).
    • Place it on any surface.
    • Click on the cake and select "Add Birthday Candles."
    • Click the cake again and choose "Have [Sim's Name] Blow Out Candles." The Sim will then age up.
  2. Cheats: For immediate aging without a cake.
    • Open the cheat console by pressing Ctrl + Shift + C.
    • Type testingcheats true and press Enter.
    • Type cas.fulleditmode and press Enter (optional, but useful for full customization after aging).
    • Shift-click on the Sim you wish to age up.
    • Select "Trigger Age Transition." The Sim will immediately age up to the next stage.

Life Stages Breakdown

Each life stage presents unique gameplay elements and developmental goals. The Growing Together Expansion Pack significantly enhances the early life stages with new mechanics like Milestones and Quirks.

Infant (Newborn to Toddler Transition)

The Infant stage, introduced with Growing Together, bridges the gap between Newborn and Toddler, offering a more interactive and demanding experience. Infants cannot be controlled directly but have several needs and social interactions.

  • Needs: Infants have critical needs for feeding, diaper changes, comfort, and attention. Neglecting these can lead to negative moodlets and even social services intervention.
  • Caregivers: Any Teen or older Sim can care for an Infant.
  • Activities:
    • Tummy Time: Helps develop motor skills.
    • Crawling: Infants will learn to crawl, allowing them to move independently.
    • First Steps: A significant milestone, often requiring encouragement from caregivers.
    • Socializing: Infants can babble, coo, and interact with caregivers, building relationships.
  • Milestones: Infants have their own set of Milestones (e.g., "First Smile," "Rolled Over," "Crawled for the First Time") which track their development and provide satisfaction points. These are found in the Sim's profile.
  • Quirks: Infants can develop unique Quirks (e.g., "Snuggle Bug," "Early Riser," "Picky Eater") based on their experiences and care. These influence their preferences and behaviors as they grow.
  • Aging Up: Infants age up to Toddlers. Ensure they have a crib, high chair, and enough space to explore as a Toddler.

Toddler (Infant to Child Transition)

Toddlers are bundles of energy and emotion, learning rapidly and developing crucial skills.

  • Skills: Toddlers have five unique skills:
    • Communication: Improves talking, asking for things, and social interactions.
    • Movement: Improves walking, running, and climbing stairs.
    • Potty: Essential for using the toilet independently.
    • Imagination: Developed through play, storytelling, and interacting with toys.
    • Thinking: Improves problem-solving and understanding.
  • Needs: Similar to Infants but with more independence. Potty training is a key focus.
  • Activities:
    • Potty Training: Use a "Potty Chair" (found in Build/Buy Mode > Kids > Toddler).
    • Talking: Encourage them to talk to improve Communication.
    • Playing: With toys, blocks, and other Sims.
    • Reading: Caregivers can read to Toddlers.
  • Milestones: Toddlers also have Milestones related to their skill development and social interactions.
  • Quirks: Quirks developed as Infants can persist or new ones can emerge.
  • Aging Up: Toddlers age up to Children.

Child (Toddler to Teen Transition)

Children attend elementary school, develop friendships, and begin exploring their interests.

  • Skills: Children can begin developing adult skills (e.g., Creativity, Mental, Motor, Social) but at a slower pace. They also have unique "Child Skills":
    • Creativity: Developed through art, music, and imaginative play.
    • Mental: Developed through reading, chess, and science projects.
    • Motor: Developed through active play, sports, and climbing.
    • Social: Developed through interacting with other Sims.
  • School: Children attend elementary school daily. Good grades are important for future success.
  • Aspirations: Children have unique aspirations that focus on their development.
  • Activities: Homework, playing with toys, joining after-school activities (with High School Years), and building friendships.
  • Milestones: Children continue to gain Milestones related to school, friendships, and skill development.
  • Aging Up: Children age up to Teens.

Teen (Child to Young Adult Transition)

Teens navigate high school, first jobs, and the complexities of adolescence. The High School Years Expansion Pack significantly expands this stage.

  • Skills: Teens can fully develop all adult skills.
  • High School: Attend Copperdale High School (with High School Years) or go to rabbit-hole high school. Grades impact future career options.
  • Part-Time Jobs: Teens can take on various part-time jobs to earn money and gain experience.
  • Relationships: First crushes, dating, and forming strong friendships become prominent.
  • Aspirations: Teens can choose adult aspirations or continue with teen-specific ones.
  • Milestones: Milestones now include events like "First Kiss," "Got a Part-Time Job," and "Graduated High School."
  • Aging Up: Teens age up to Young Adults.

Young Adult (Teen to Adult Transition)

The Young Adult stage is often where Sims establish their careers, find partners, and start families.

  • Careers: Sims can join full-time careers and begin climbing the corporate ladder.
  • Relationships: Marriage, cohabitation, and starting a family are common themes.
  • Skills: Continue to develop skills relevant to their career and hobbies.
  • Aspirations: Focus on achieving their chosen aspiration.
  • Aging Up: Young Adults age up to Adults.

Adult (Young Adult to Elder Transition)

Adults are typically at the peak of their careers and family life, raising children and enjoying their established lives.

  • Careers: Often reaching the top of their chosen career paths.
  • Family: Raising children, sending them to college, and potentially becoming grandparents.
  • Hobbies: More time for personal interests and hobbies.
  • Aging Up: Adults age up to Elders.

Elder (Adult to Death)

Elders enjoy retirement, spend time with grandchildren, and reflect on their lives.

  • Retirement: Elders can retire from their careers, receiving a pension.
  • Family: Often become grandparents and enjoy spending time with their extended family.
  • Hobbies: Pursue leisurely activities and pass on wisdom.
  • Death: Eventually, Elders will die of old age. This can be a sad event for the family, but it's a natural part of the game's life cycle. Sims can also die from various other causes at any life stage.

Milestones and Quirks (Growing Together)

The Growing Together Expansion Pack introduces two significant features that add depth to Sim development:

Milestones

Milestones are significant life events that track a Sim's journey from birth to adulthood. They provide a narrative backbone and can influence a Sim's personality and memories.

  • Tracking: Milestones are visible in a Sim's profile under the "Milestones" tab.
  • Types: They range from "First Smile" and "Rolled Over" for Infants, to "First Kiss" for Teens, and "Got Married" for Young Adults.
  • Impact: Completing Milestones can sometimes unlock new social interactions, moodlets, or even influence future Quirks.

Quirks

Quirks are unique personality traits that develop in Infants, Toddlers, and Children based on their experiences, environment, and care. They add a layer of individuality and challenge to gameplay.

  • Development: Quirks are not chosen but emerge organically. For example, an Infant frequently held might become a "Snuggle Bug," or one often left alone might develop "Picky Eater."
  • Impact: Quirks influence a Sim's preferences, needs, and behaviors. A "Early Riser" Sim will wake up early, while a "Loves Being Carried" Sim will prefer to be held.
  • Managing Quirks: Some Quirks can be challenging (e.g., "Loud" Infants), requiring specific strategies from caregivers. Others are endearing.
  • Persistence: Quirks can persist into later life stages, shaping the Sim's personality as they grow.
