Pregnancy & Childbirth

Bringing a new life into your Sim's world is a rewarding and sometimes chaotic experience in The Sims 4. This comprehensive guide will walk you through every step, from conception to welcoming your bundle of joy, covering base game mechanics and relevant expansion pack features.

I. Conception: Making a Baby

There are several ways for your Sims to conceive, depending on their romantic status, available packs, and your gameplay preferences.

  • "Try for Baby" Interaction: This is the most common and accessible method. Your Sims need to have a high romantic relationship (usually a full pink bar) and be in a romantic mood. Select a double bed, observatory, rocket ship, or even a bush (if you have the Outdoor Retreat Game Pack) and choose the "Try for Baby" interaction. This interaction has a chance of success, so you might need to try a few times.
  • WooHoo with a Chance of Pregnancy: While not a base game feature, some players utilize mods to introduce "Risky WooHoo" mechanics, where any WooHoo interaction can result in pregnancy. For a base game guide, we focus on the intended mechanics.
  • Science Baby (Growing Together Expansion Pack): For Sims who prefer a non-traditional route, are single, or wish to choose the genetics of their child, the "Science Baby" option is available.
    • Access a computer.
    • Select the "Order a Science Baby" interaction under the "Household" or "Socialize" menu.
    • You can choose to have the baby with another Sim (who must be a close friend or family member, and their consent will be sought) or as a single parent.
    • After a brief wait, your Sim will receive a notification that the baby is ready to be born. The baby will then appear in a bassinet in your Sim's home.
  • Alien Abduction (Get to Work Expansion Pack): Male Sims have a rare chance of being abducted by aliens and returning pregnant. This is an unpredictable event, often occurring when Sims use the "Telescope" or have high Logic skill. Female Sims can also be abducted, but they do not become pregnant from it.

Confirmation: You'll know your Sim is pregnant when they experience morning sickness (vomiting in a toilet) and receive the "Eating for Two" moodlet. A doctor's visit can confirm it early on. To initiate this, use the phone, navigate to the "Household" category, and select "Call Doctor." Then, choose the "Take Pregnancy Test" interaction. The doctor will arrive shortly to perform the test and confirm the pregnancy.

II. The Trimesters: What to Expect

Pregnancy in The Sims 4 lasts approximately three in-game days, divided into three trimesters, each lasting about 24 hours. Your Sim's belly will progressively grow, and new interactions and moodlets will appear, reflecting the stages of pregnancy.

A. First Trimester (Day 1)

This initial stage is often marked by the earliest signs of pregnancy.

  • Symptoms: Morning sickness is common. Your Sim might feel nauseous and throw up, especially after waking up or eating.
  • Moodlets:
    • "Eating for Two" (+1 Happy): A generally positive moodlet indicating the Sim is pregnant.
    • "Nauseous" (-1 Uncomfortable): This moodlet can appear intermittently, causing discomfort.
  • Interactions:
    • "Tell a Joke About Being Pregnant" (to other Sims): A social interaction to share the news.
  • What to Do: Focus on keeping your Sim comfortable. Ensure they have easy access to a toilet to manage nausea and try to keep their overall needs high to prevent additional stress.

B. Second Trimester (Day 2)

The pregnancy becomes more apparent, and your Sim may start to feel the baby's movements.

  • Symptoms: The baby bump becomes more noticeable. Your Sim might start feeling kicks from within.
  • Moodlets:
    • "Feeling Kicks" (+1 Happy): A positive moodlet as the Sim feels the baby move.
    • "A Little Uncomfortable" (-1 Uncomfortable): A mild discomfort moodlet due to the growing belly.
  • Interactions:
    • "Feel the Baby Kick" (on their own belly): A self-interaction to experience the kicks.
    • "Ask to Feel the Baby" (for other Sims to interact with the pregnant Sim): Allows friends and family to connect with the pregnancy.
  • What to Do: Start preparing for the baby's arrival. Consider purchasing essential nursery items like a "Bassinet" (found in the "Kids" section of Build/Buy Mode, under "Cribs") and a "Changing Table" (also in "Kids").

C. Third Trimester (Day 3)

This is the final stretch, with the most significant physical changes and preparations for birth.

  • Symptoms: The baby bump is very large. Your Sim will move slower and experience more discomfort. Backaches are common.
  • Moodlets:
    • "Huge and Uncomfortable" (-2 Uncomfortable): Reflects the significant physical strain.
    • "Backache" (-1 Uncomfortable): A common ailment in the late stages.
  • Interactions:
    • "Complain About Backache" (to other Sims): A social interaction to express discomfort.
    • "Talk to Baby" (on their own belly): A bonding interaction with the unborn child.
  • What to Do: This is the final stage! Ensure all baby essentials are in place and the nursery is ready. Consider planning a "Baby Shower" (if you have the Parenthood Game Pack) by planning a social event. Make sure your Sim is well-rested and fed, as labor can begin at any moment.

III. Labor & Childbirth

When labor begins, your Sim will receive the "In Labor!" moodlet and start clutching their belly. You have several options for how your Sim will give birth, each with its own experience.

A. At Home Birth (Base Game)

  • Process: Once labor starts, your Sim will eventually give birth wherever they are in the house. They will typically sit or lie down, and after a few interactions (like "Push"), the baby will appear in a bassinet. If no bassinet is present, the baby will still be born, but it's highly recommended to have one ready.
  • Advantages: Convenient, no loading screens, allows other household members to be present without traveling.
  • Disadvantages: No medical staff or specialized birthing options.

B. Hospital Birth (Get to Work Expansion Pack)

  • Process: When your Sim goes into labor, click on them and select the "Have Baby at Hospital" interaction. Your Sim (and any selected household members who are on the lot) will travel to the "Hospital" lot.
    1. Upon arrival, check in at the front desk.
    2. A doctor will guide your Sim to a "Birthing Bed."
    3. You can choose to have an "Epidural" (for comfort, reducing Uncomfortable moodlets) or opt for a "Natural Birth."
    4. Follow the on-screen prompts, which may include "Push," "Breathe," or "Talk to Doctor."
    5. After a few interactions, your Sim will give birth. You'll then be prompted to name the baby.
  • Advantages: Immersive experience, medical staff present, option for epidural, more interactive birth process.
  • Disadvantages: Requires the Get to Work pack, involves a loading screen.

C. Other Birth Locations

While less common and generally not recommended for a controlled experience, Sims can give birth in other locations if labor progresses there. This might happen on a community lot or at a friend's house. The baby will simply appear in a bassinet nearby if one is available; otherwise, they will be born without one.

IV. After the Birth: Welcoming Your Newborn

Congratulations! Your Sim has welcomed a new member to the family. Newborns are a unique life stage with specific needs and limited interactions.

  • Newborn Stage: Newborns are essentially objects placed in a bassinet. They cannot be placed on the floor or directly interacted with by Sims other than their caregivers.
    • Needs: Their primary needs are "Hunger," "Hygiene," and "Attention." These are managed by adult Sims.
    • Interactions: Only adult Sims can "Feed" (using a bottle or breastfeeding if available), "Change Diaper," "Cuddle," and "Talk To" the newborn.
    • Naming: You will be prompted to name your baby immediately after birth. If you are at the hospital, this happens after the birth sequence.
    • Duration: The newborn stage lasts approximately 24-48 in-game hours before they age up to the next life stage.
  • Ageing Up: After the newborn stage concludes, you'll receive a notification that your newborn is ready to age up. Click on the bassinet and select "Age Up Baby." They will transform into an "Infant" (if you have the Growing Together Expansion Pack) or a "Toddler" (base game).

V. Tips for a Smooth Pregnancy

  • Keep Needs High: A happy, well-rested, and fed pregnant Sim will have an easier and more comfortable pregnancy. Prioritize their needs above all else.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Ensure your Sim has maternity wear. The game automatically switches to maternity clothes during pregnancy, but you can customize these outfits in Create-A-Sim for better comfort and style.
  • Prepare the Nursery: Purchase a bassinet, changing table, and any other desired baby items (like toys or a mobile) before labor begins. This ensures a smooth transition and immediate care for the newborn.
  • Take Time Off Work: Consider having your Sim take "Family Leave" (via the phone's "Work" menu) to focus on their pregnancy, prepare for the baby, and care for the newborn without the stress of work obligations.
  • Ask for Help: Other household members can significantly assist by taking care of chores, cooking, and tending to the pregnant Sim's needs, making the experience more manageable for everyone.
  • Utilize Moodlets: Pay attention to your Sim's moodlets. If they are experiencing negative moodlets, try to address the cause, whether it's hunger, low energy, or discomfort. Positive moodlets can also be boosted through enjoyable activities.
