Optimization & Expertise System
As you delve deeper into the endgame of The Division 2, you'll inevitably encounter the Optimization and Expertise systems. These two intertwined mechanics are crucial for pushing your builds to their absolute peak performance, transforming good gear into truly exceptional, "unicorn" level items. Understanding and using them effectively is key to tackling the most challenging content, such as Legendary Strongholds, Raids, and the upper floors of The Summit.
The Optimization Station: Perfecting Your Gear
The Optimization Station, located next to the Recalibration Station in the Base of Operations (or at any Settlement), allows you to maximize the attribute rolls on your gear. While Recalibration lets you swap one attribute, Optimization lets you incrementally increase the value of all attributes on an item until they reach their maximum possible roll.
Walkthrough: Optimizing an Item
- Identify Target Gear: Select an item you wish to optimize. Prioritize items with desirable attributes that are already close to their maximum, or items that are foundational to your core build. For example, a Providence Defense chest piece with Weapon Damage, Critical Hit Chance, and Critical Hit Damage that are all at 80-90% of their max roll is an excellent candidate.
- Access the Optimization Station: Interact with the Optimization Station in the Base of Operations.
- Select Item: Navigate to the item you want to optimize from your inventory.
- Review Costs: The station will display the resources required for each optimization step. These costs escalate with each optimization level and vary based on the item type (weapon, armor, skill mod). Common resources include:
- Optimization Materials: These are the primary currency. You'll need a significant amount.
- SHD Calibration: Acquired from SHD watch levels after reaching Level 40.
- Field Recon Data: Obtained from Control Point Level 3 and 4 completions, as well as certain bounties.
- Exotic Components: Required for optimizing Exotic items. These are scarce, so use them wisely.
- Faction-Specific Materials: Such as
True Sons Tactical Assessments orBlack Tusk Data Chips , earned from defeating named enemies of those factions or deconstructing their gear.
- Optimize: Confirm the optimization. Each step increases the attribute rolls by a small percentage. You can repeat this process until all attributes on the item are at 100% of their maximum value.
Strategy Tip: Don't optimize items that have poor base rolls or attributes you eventually plan to recalibrate. Optimize items that are already strong and just need that final push to perfection.
The Expertise System: Mastering Your Arsenal
The Expertise system is a long-term progression mechanic that allows you to permanently increase the base stats of your gear, skills, and specializations. By gaining "Proficiency" with various item types, you can then "Expertise" them, providing a direct, flat stat bonus.
Walkthrough: Gaining Proficiency and Expertise
The Expertise system is accessed via the "Expertise" tab in your inventory menu.
- Gain Proficiency Ranks: To gain Expertise on an item, skill, or specialization, you first need to reach Proficiency Rank 10 with it. There are several ways to gain Proficiency:
- Using the Item/Skill: Simply equip and use the weapon, armor brand set, gear set, skill, or specialization in combat. The more you use it, the faster its Proficiency Rank increases.
- Donating Materials: At the Expertise menu, you can donate unwanted gear, materials, or even currency (like E-Credits) to increase the Proficiency Rank of a specific item type. This is particularly useful for items you don't frequently use but want to Expertise, or to quickly max out a brand set.
- Donating Gear: Donating a piece of gear (e.g., a "Fenris Group" chest piece) will contribute to the Proficiency of the "Fenris Group" brand set. Higher rarity items (High-End, Named, Exotic) provide more Proficiency.
- Donating Materials: You can donate various crafting and optimization materials directly to an item type's Proficiency.
- Reach Proficiency Rank 10: Once an item, skill, or specialization reaches Proficiency Rank 10, it becomes "Proficient."
- Increase Expertise Level: After becoming Proficient, you can then increase its Expertise Level. This requires specific resources, primarily
Exotic Components andSHD Calibration . Each Expertise Level grants a small, permanent stat bonus to that item type (e.g., +1% Weapon Damage for a weapon, +1% Armor for an armor piece, +1% Skill Damage for a skill). - Global Expertise Level: Your overall "Expertise Level" (displayed at the top of the Expertise menu) is the average of all your Proficient items. This global level determines the maximum Expertise Level you can apply to any single item. For example, if your global Expertise Level is 5, you can only Expertise a weapon up to Level 5.
Prioritizing Expertise
Given the significant resource investment, especially Exotic Components, strategic prioritization is crucial:
- Core Weapons: Your primary and secondary weapons that are integral to your builds should be among the first to be Expertised. A +10% Weapon Damage bonus on your
St. Elmo's Engine orChameleon is a massive boost. - Key Armor Pieces: Focus on armor pieces that provide significant offensive or defensive benefits, such as your chest and backpack, especially if they have powerful talents.
- Essential Skills: If a skill is central to your build (e.g.,
Striker Drone ,Turret ,Reviver Hive ), increasing its Expertise will directly improve its effectiveness. - Brand Sets/Gear Sets: While more expensive, Expertising entire brand or gear sets can provide a global boost to all pieces of that set you equip.
Farming Strategy: To efficiently gain Proficiency, target activities that drop a high volume of loot, such as
