Dialogue Choices & Impact
While Unicorn Overlord is primarily a strategy RPG focused on tactical combat and unit management, the narrative often presents players with crucial dialogue choices that can significantly alter character relationships, unlock unique side quests, and even influence the availability of certain recruits or items. Unlike some RPGs where choices are purely cosmetic, here they can have tangible, long-term consequences. Pay close attention to character personalities and motivations when making decisions.
Understanding the Impact System
Dialogue choices in Unicorn Overlord generally fall into a few categories:
- Affinity Boosts: These choices improve the rapport between Alain and a specific character, or between two allied characters. Higher affinity can unlock new support conversations, unique items, and sometimes even powerful combined attacks in battle.
- Morality/Alignment Shifts: While not a strict "good/evil" system, certain decisions can subtly shift how other characters perceive Alain, potentially opening or closing off future narrative paths.
- Quest Alterations: Some choices directly impact the progression of side quests, leading to different outcomes, rewards, or even failing a quest entirely.
- Recruitment Opportunities: In rare but critical instances, a specific dialogue choice is the key to recruiting certain optional characters. Missing these can mean permanently losing access to a powerful ally.
- Item/Resource Acquisition: Occasionally, a correct dialogue option can yield a valuable item, a sum of gold, or even a rare piece of equipment.
Key Dialogue Encounters and Their Outcomes
Chapter 2: The Fall of Cornia
During the initial escape from Cornia, after the battle at the Cornia Outpost, you'll encounter a wounded soldier. Your choice here is critical:
- Option A: "Offer aid and supplies."
- Impact: +5 Affinity with Josef. The soldier will provide you with a Minor Healing Potion and a Copper Coin Pouch. This choice reinforces Alain's compassionate nature.
- Walkthrough: Select this option immediately when prompted. Josef will approve, and the soldier will express gratitude.
- Option B: "Prioritize escape, leave him."
- Impact: -5 Affinity with Josef. No items gained. Josef will express disappointment in Alain's pragmatism.
- Walkthrough: While seemingly faster, this option offers no tangible benefit and slightly lowers Josef's opinion of you.
Chapter 5: The Liberation of Drakenhold
When you confront the mercenary leader Gammel at the Ruined City of Gran Corrine, after defeating his unit, a dialogue choice will appear:
- Option A: "Offer him a chance at redemption."
- Impact: Unlocks the side quest “A Mercenary’s Path” in Chapter 7. Gammel will retreat but appear later as a potential recruit. This choice requires a certain level of overall Renown (Tier B or higher) to be successful. If your Renown is too low, he will refuse and flee permanently.
- Walkthrough: Ensure your Renown is sufficient before this encounter. Choose this option. Gammel will be hesitant but ultimately accept the offer to reconsider his loyalties.
- Option B: "Execute him for his crimes."
- Impact: Gammel is permanently removed from the game. No further quests or recruitment opportunities involving him will arise. You gain a Steel Sword from his defeated unit.
- Walkthrough: If you're not interested in recruiting Gammel or lack the Renown, this is the straightforward option.
Chapter 9: The Elheim Forest
Upon entering the Whispering Woods, you'll encounter a lost Elheim villager. Your response can influence a later encounter:
- Option A: "Guide them to the nearest settlement."
- Impact: The villager safely reaches Windswept Hamlet. Later, during the quest “The Forest’s Plea”, this villager will provide you with a Elheim Herbal Remedy (restores 50 PP to one unit) before the final battle, significantly aiding your efforts.
- Walkthrough: Take the time to escort the villager. This is a small investment for a valuable tactical item later.
- Option B: "Point them in a general direction."
- Impact: The villager may or may not reach safety. You receive no additional aid in “The Forest’s Plea”.
- Walkthrough: This saves a small amount of time but foregoes a useful item.
General Advice for Dialogue Choices
- Save Frequently: Before major story beats or character interactions, always make a quick save. This allows you to experiment with different dialogue options and reload if the outcome isn't to your liking.
- Consider Character Personalities: Think about what Alain's core values are, or what a specific character (like Josef or Scarlett) would approve of. Choices that align with their ideals often yield positive affinity.
- Read Carefully: The phrasing of dialogue options can be subtle. Pay attention to keywords that hint at the potential consequences.
- Renown Matters: As seen with Gammel, your overall Renown can gate certain "positive" outcomes. If you're aiming for a specific recruitment or reward, ensure your Renown is sufficiently high.
- No "Wrong" Answers (Mostly): While some choices are objectively better for rewards or recruitment, Unicorn Overlord generally allows for different playstyles. Don't feel pressured to always pick the "optimal" choice if you prefer a different narrative path.
