Character Skill Trees & Progression
Understanding and optimizing your character's skill trees and progression is paramount to success in the tactical battles of Unicorn Overlord. Each character class boasts a unique set of active and passive skills, and mastering their development can turn the tide of even the most challenging encounters.
Skill Point Allocation: The Basics
Upon leveling up, characters gain Skill Points (SP) that can be invested into their class's specific skill tree. These trees unlock new active abilities, enhance existing ones, or provide powerful passive bonuses. Prioritize skills that complement your unit's role and the overall strategy of your squad.
- Active Skills: These are abilities used during combat, often consuming AP (Action Points) or PP (Passive Points). Examples include offensive attacks, healing spells, or debuffs.
- Passive Skills: These abilities trigger automatically under certain conditions, consuming PP. They can provide stat boosts, counter-attacks, or defensive buffs.
- Stat Boosts: Some nodes in the skill tree directly increase a character's core stats like Attack, Defense, or Initiative. These are often prerequisites for more powerful skills.
Promotions and Class Upgrades
Beyond simply leveling up, characters can undergo promotions to more advanced classes, significantly expanding their skill trees and statistical growth. Promotions typically occur at specific level thresholds (e.g., Level 10, Level 20) and require a certain item, the Proof of Valor.
- Proof of Valor Acquisition: These crucial promotion items are primarily obtained through completing main story quests, certain side quests, and as rewards for defeating powerful optional bosses. Keep an eye out for them in the following locations:
- Cornia: The "Liberation of Barbatos" main quest rewards your first Proof of Valor.
- Drakenhold: Completing the "Dragon's Roar" side quest often yields another.
- Elheim: The "Forest of the Elves" main quest will provide a Proof of Valor necessary for promoting your magical units.
- Strategic Promotions: Don't promote every character immediately. Consider the immediate needs of your units. Promoting a key frontline Infantry unit like a Fighter to a Gladiator early can provide crucial damage and survivability, while promoting a backline Shaman to a Witch might be better delayed until you need more potent magical debuffs.
- New Skill Trees: Promoted classes gain entirely new skill trees, often with more potent versions of their base class skills and entirely new abilities. For example, a basic Soldier might promote to a High Lord, gaining access to powerful leadership skills and improved defensive capabilities.
Optimizing Skill Builds: Key Strategies
The "Unicorn Overlord" combat system heavily relies on unit synergy. When allocating skill points, always consider how a character's skills interact with the rest of their unit and the broader army composition.
- Frontline Tanks (e.g., Hoplite, Fighter): Prioritize defensive passive skills that reduce damage taken (e.g., "Guard Stance," "Iron Wall") and active skills that draw enemy aggro or apply debuffs. For a Hoplite, investing in "Shield Bash" for Stun and "Defensive Formation" for unit-wide defense is crucial.
- Damage Dealers (e.g., Hunter, Warrior): Focus on active skills that deal high damage (e.g., "Arrow Rain," "Cleave") and passive skills that boost critical hit chance or attack power (e.g., "Precision Strike," "Berserker Rage"). For a Hunter, "True Shot" is a must-have for targeting specific enemies.
- Support/Healers (e.g., Cleric, Shaman): Maximize healing active skills (e.g., "Heal," "Greater Heal") and passive skills that restore PP or AP to allies (e.g., "Inspire," "Chant"). A Cleric's "Holy Light" for area healing is invaluable. Shamans should prioritize "Curse" and "Debilitate" to cripple enemy units.
- Mages (e.g., Wizard, Witch): Invest in area-of-effect (AoE) active spells (e.g., "Fireball," "Blizzard") and passive skills that increase magic attack or reduce spell cooldowns. The Wizard's "Chain Lightning" can devastate grouped enemies.
Remember, experimentation is key. Don't be afraid to respec skill points early on if a build isn't working, though respec options become more limited later in the game. Plan your promotions carefully and tailor each character's skill tree to their role within your elite forces!
