Steel Path
Welcome, Tenno, to the true test of your mastery: The Steel Path. This isn't just a difficulty bump; it's a complete overhaul of the Star Chart, designed to challenge even the most seasoned players. Enemies boast significantly increased health, shields, and armor, and their levels are boosted by 100. Furthermore, all missions include an Acolyte encounter, formidable foes that drop valuable Steel Essence and Arcanes.
Unlocking the Steel Path
Before you can even contemplate the Steel Path, you must first prove your worth on the standard Star Chart. The prerequisite is simple yet demanding:
- Complete every single node on the regular Star Chart. This includes all planets, junctions, and Dark Sector missions. There should be no red blinking nodes left on your navigation screen.
- Once all nodes are cleared, a new option will appear on your Orbiter's navigation console, allowing you to toggle between the standard Star Chart and the Steel Path.
Essential Preparations for Steel Path
Approaching the Steel Path unprepared is a recipe for frustration. Your standard builds likely won't cut it. Here's what you need to focus on:
1. Modding for Survival and Damage
The core of Steel Path success lies in your modding. You need to maximize both your damage output and your Warframe's survivability.
- Damage Types:
- Corrosive (Electric + Toxin): Excellent against Grineer (Armor) and Infested (Flesh).
- Viral (Cold + Toxin): Strong against Corpus (Health) and Infested (Flesh). Often paired with Heat for additional damage over time and armor stripping.
- Radiation (Electric + Heat): Effective against Alloy Armor (found on some Grineer heavy units and bosses) and Robotic enemies.
- Armor Stripping/Reduction:
- Ability-based: Warframes like Trinity (Abating Link Augment), Ash (Shuriken with Seeking Shuriken Augment), Styanax (Thurible with Intrepid Stand Augment), and Hildryn (Pillage) are invaluable.
- Weapon-based: Weapons with high status chance can apply Corrosive Procs, which reduce armor. The Strun Prime or Kuva Chakkhurr are good examples.
- External Sources: The Shattering Impact mod for melee weapons can permanently strip armor.
- Survivability:
- Adaptation: This mod is almost mandatory, providing significant damage reduction against incoming damage types.
- Rolling Guard: Grants temporary invulnerability and status cleanse after a dodge roll, crucial for repositioning and avoiding lethal damage.
- Health/Shield/Armor Mods: Vitality, Redirection, Steel Fiber, and their Prime/Umbral variants are essential.
- Shield Gating: A powerful mechanic where fully depleted shields grant a brief invulnerability period. Warframes with high shield capacity or abilities that restore shields quickly (e.g., Hildryn, Mag) can exploit this.
2. Companion Selection
Your companion is more than just a pet; it's a vital part of your Steel Path strategy.
- Smeeta Kavat: Offers the Charm buff, which can provide critical chance, resource doubling, and instant ability cooldowns, making it excellent for farming and burst damage.
- Panzer Vulpaphyla: An immortal companion that spreads Viral status with its spores, significantly boosting your damage against high-health enemies. Its Panzer Devolution mod ensures it revives itself.
- Helios Prime with Deconstructor Prime: While not as directly combat-oriented, its Investigator mod can scan enemies for Codex entries, and the Deconstructor Prime can be modded for decent damage.
3. Focus Schools
Your chosen Focus School can dramatically impact your Steel Path performance.
- Vazarin: Provides instant revives, healing, and increased affinity range, making it excellent for team play and general survivability.
- Naramon: Offers increased melee combo duration, crucial for melee-focused builds, and energy regeneration.
- Zenurik: Provides significant energy regeneration, allowing for more frequent ability usage, which is often key to Steel Path success.
- Madurai: Focuses on raw damage output, particularly for abilities, and provides a powerful damage buff.
- Unairu: Offers armor stripping with its Caustic Strike ability and damage reduction, making it a strong choice for tanky builds.
Confronting the Acolytes
Each Steel Path mission will feature an Acolyte, a powerful enemy that appears after a certain number of kills. There are six unique Acolytes, each with distinct abilities and weaknesses:
- Violence: Uses abilities similar to Excalibur. Vulnerable to Radiation.
- Malice: Uses abilities similar to Mag. Vulnerable to Puncture and Radiation.
- Torment: Uses abilities similar to Trinity. Vulnerable to Corrosive and Slash.
- Angst: Uses abilities similar to Ember. Vulnerable to Cold and Viral.
- Mania: Uses abilities similar to Valkyr. Vulnerable to Corrosive and Slash.
- Fear: Uses abilities similar to Ash. Vulnerable to Radiation and Puncture.
Acolytes drop Steel Essence, a crucial currency for purchasing exclusive items from Teshin, and rare Arcanes.
Farming Steel Essence
Steel Essence is the primary reward for enduring the Steel Path. It's used to purchase several valuable items from Teshin's Steel Path Honors store, located in any Relay:
- Riven Slivers: Used to craft Riven Mods.
- Umbra Forma Blueprint: Allows you to add an Umbra polarity to a Warframe or weapon, essential for maximizing builds.
- Kuva: A resource used to re-roll Riven Mods.
- Relics: Various Void Relics, including Axi and Neo.
- Cosmetics: Exclusive Steel Path Emblems and other aesthetic items.
The most efficient way to farm Steel Essence is often through Survival or Disruption missions, as these allow for extended stays and multiple Acolyte spawns. Consider bringing a Smeeta Kavat for its Charm buff, which can double Steel Essence drops.
Recommended Warframes for Steel Path
While many Warframes can excel with proper modding, some naturally shine in the Steel Path due to their crowd control, damage amplification, or survivability.
- Wukong: His Defy ability provides multiple lives, and his Celestial Twin offers significant additional damage and distraction.
- Revenant: Mesmer Skin grants complete invulnerability to damage and status effects for several charges, making him incredibly tanky.
- Octavia: Her abilities provide stealth, powerful damage buffs, and excellent crowd control, allowing her to clear rooms with ease.
- Nezha: Warding Halo provides substantial damage reduction and status immunity, making him very durable.
- Saryn: Her Miasma and Spore abilities can quickly clear large groups of enemies, especially in endless missions.
- Protea: Excellent for energy and health regeneration with Dispensary, and powerful crowd control and damage with Blaze Artillery.
General Strategies
- Stay Mobile: Standing still is a death sentence. use bullet jumps, rolls, and Warframe abilities to constantly reposition and avoid enemy fire.
- Prioritize Threats: Heavy Gunners, Bombards, Nullifiers, and Eximus units pose significant threats. Learn to identify and eliminate them quickly.
- Use Cover: While not always possible, using environmental cover can reduce incoming damage.
- Team Composition: When playing in a squad, coordinate your Warframe choices to create synergistic builds (e.g., a damage dealer, a crowd controller, a support).
- Don't Be Afraid to Experiment: The Steel Path encourages diverse builds. Don't be afraid to try new weapons, Warframes, and mod combinations to find what works best for you.
The Steel Path is a journey, not a sprint. Take your time, refine your builds, and learn from each encounter. The rewards are well worth the challenge!
