Soldier Training & AWC
The backbone of XCOM's resistance against ADVENT is its soldiers. Effective training and strategic use of the Advanced Warfare Center (AWC) are paramount to turning raw recruits into elite operatives capable of facing the toughest alien threats. This section will guide you through optimizing your soldier development.
Recruitment and Initial Training
Your journey with a new soldier begins the moment they join your ranks. Recruits are initially assigned a random class upon promotion to Squaddie, unless you utilize specific facilities or modifications. While random assignment can sometimes yield unexpected but powerful combinations, a more controlled approach is often beneficial.
- Rookie Pool Management: Always maintain a healthy pool of Rookies. These unassigned soldiers are crucial for replacing casualties and filling out your roster. Aim for at least 10-15 Rookies early on, scaling up as your squad size increases.
- Guerrilla Tactics School (GTS): This is your first and most important training facility. Build it as soon as possible after the AWC. The GTS allows you to purchase crucial Squad Upgrades like Squad Size I and Squad Size II, increasing the number of soldiers you can deploy on missions. More importantly, it allows you to train Rookies into specific classes for a small supply cost, ensuring you get the exact specialists you need. Prioritize training a diverse set of classes: Sharpshooters for long-range damage, Specialists for healing and hacking, Grenadiers for area-of-effect destruction, and Rangers for close-quarters combat.
- Early Promotion Strategy: Don't be afraid to send Rookies on easy missions (e.g., "Neutralize VIP" or "Extract Data" missions with low threat levels) to gain experience and promote them to Squaddie. This allows you to either accept their random class or use the GTS to re-spec them if needed.
The Advanced Warfare Center (AWC)
The AWC is a critical facility for enhancing your soldiers' capabilities beyond their standard class progression. It provides passive healing and, more importantly, grants soldiers a chance to learn an additional, random ability from another class's perk tree. This can lead to incredibly powerful and versatile soldiers.
Building and Upgrading the AWC
- Construction Priority: The AWC should be one of your very first facility builds, ideally right after the GTS. Its passive healing component is invaluable for reducing downtime for injured soldiers, allowing you to deploy your best troops more frequently.
- Location: Place the AWC adjacent to a Power Coil if possible to reduce its power consumption. While not as power-hungry as some later facilities, every bit helps in the early game.
- Upgrade: The AWC has one upgrade, the Advanced Warfare Center Upgrade. This upgrade significantly increases the speed at which soldiers recover from wounds and, crucially, allows soldiers to gain their bonus ability at a lower rank (Sergeant instead of Captain). Prioritize this upgrade once you have a steady income of supplies and engineers.
Utilizing the AWC's Bonus Abilities
The AWC's most impactful feature is the chance for soldiers to gain a bonus ability. This ability is randomly chosen from any other class's perk tree, including those not typically available to their primary class. This opens up a vast array of strategic possibilities.
- Understanding the Mechanic: A soldier gains a bonus ability upon reaching the rank of Sergeant (or Captain if the AWC is not upgraded). This ability is revealed in their character screen under the "AWC Abilities" section. the ability is randomly rolled when the soldier reaches the required rank, not when they enter the AWC.
- Strategic Respecs: If a soldier gains a particularly synergistic or powerful AWC ability, consider building your strategy around it. For example, a Sharpshooter with Run and Gun (Ranger ability) becomes a highly mobile sniper, capable of repositioning and firing in the same turn. A Grenadier with Ever Vigilant (Specialist ability) can gain free overwatch after dashing, increasing their defensive utility.
- The "Re-roll" Strategy (Optional, but powerful): While not explicitly a game mechanic, some players utilize a save-scumming strategy to "re-roll" AWC abilities. Before a soldier reaches the rank that grants an AWC ability, save your game. If the ability they receive is undesirable, reload your save and try to gain experience on a different mission or in a different order. This can be time-consuming but guarantees optimal AWC perks for your key soldiers.
- Focus on Core Classes: While all classes can benefit from AWC perks, some combinations are particularly potent. Look for abilities that complement a soldier's primary role or shore up their weaknesses.
- Rangers: Rapid Fire (Sharpshooter) for massive single-target damage, or Field Medic (Specialist) for unexpected healing utility.
- Sharpshooters: Run and Gun (Ranger) for mobility, or Shredder (Grenadier) to make their sniper shots even more devastating against armored targets.
- Grenadiers: Concealment (Ranger) for scouting, or Guardian (Specialist) for multiple overwatch shots after their initial attack.
- Specialists: Bladestorm (Ranger) for close-quarters defense, or Salvo (Grenadier) to throw a grenade and still take a primary action.
By carefully managing your soldier recruitment, leveraging the GTS for class assignments, and strategically utilizing the AWC's bonus abilities, you can forge an XCOM squad capable of overcoming any challenge ADVENT throws your way.
