Climax Battles
Climax Battles are a series of challenging combat scenarios unlocked after completing the main story of Yakuza 0. These battles test your mastery of Kiryu and Majima's fighting styles, requiring strategic thinking and precise execution. They are accessible from the main menu under "Premium Adventure" or "New Game+". Successfully completing all Climax Battles is a requirement for the "Amon's Deciple" trophy and unlocks the legendary Amon fights in Premium Adventure.
General Strategies
- Master Your Styles: Each Climax Battle often favors specific fighting styles. Kiryu's Brawler, Rush, and Beast styles, and Majima's Thug, Slugger, and Breaker styles all have their strengths and weaknesses. Understand when to switch and exploit enemy vulnerabilities.
- Heat Management: Heat Actions are your most potent tools. Learn which Heat Actions are most effective against different enemy types and bosses. Conserve Heat for critical moments, but don't be afraid to use it to clear out crowds or deal significant damage to a tough opponent.
- Environmental Awareness: Many Climax Battles feature interactive environments. Use weapons, furniture, and even walls to your advantage. Kiryu's Beast style and Majima's Slugger style excel at weaponizing their surroundings.
- Defense is Key: Blocking, dodging, and parrying are crucial. Don't just button mash; observe enemy attack patterns and respond accordingly. A well-timed dodge can open up a critical counter-attack opportunity.
- Practice Makes Perfect: Some Climax Battles are incredibly difficult. Don't get discouraged if you fail. Learn from your mistakes, adjust your strategy, and try again.
Specific Battle Walkthroughs (Examples)
Kiryu's Trial: The Brawler's Gauntlet
This trial focuses on Kiryu's Brawler style. You'll face waves of increasingly difficult enemies in a confined space, similar to the Champion District alleys.
- Wave 1: Street Punks: Start by using quick combos (Square, Square, Triangle) to build Heat. Utilize the environment by grabbing nearby bicycles or traffic cones to deal extra damage.
- Wave 2: Knife Wielders: These enemies are faster and can inflict bleeding. Prioritize disarming them with a grab (Circle) followed by a Heat Action, or use a quick dodge-and-counter strategy.
- Wave 3: Heavyweights: These larger enemies have high health and guard frequently. Break their guard with charged attacks (hold Triangle) or use a Heat Action like the "Essence of Wall Crush" if you can maneuver them near a wall.
- Boss: Gang Leader: The leader is a skilled fighter. Focus on parrying his attacks (L1 + X when he attacks) to create openings for your most powerful Brawler combos and Heat Actions. Consider using the "Essence of Finishing Blow" when his health is low.
Majima's Trial: Breaker's Dance-Off
This trial showcases Majima's Breaker style. You'll be in an open area, facing multiple agile opponents who try to surround you.
- Initial Encounter: Agile Thugs: Immediately activate Breaker style. Use wide-sweeping attacks (Triangle, Triangle, Triangle) to hit multiple enemies. The "Essence of Rolling Thunder" Heat Action is excellent for crowd control.
- Mid-Battle Reinforcements: Baton Wielders: These enemies have slightly longer reach. Continue to use Breaker's area-of-effect attacks. If you get surrounded, use a quick dodge (X) to reposition and create space.
- Final Wave: Armored Fighters: These opponents have higher defense. While Breaker's normal attacks can still chip away, focus on building Heat quickly. The "Essence of Breakdance Spin" or "Essence of Headbutt" (if you can grab them) are effective for breaking their guard and dealing damage. Keep moving and don't let them corner you.
Ultimate Match: Amon's Challenge
This is the ultimate Climax Battle, pitting you against Jo Amon. This fight is incredibly tough and requires mastery of both Kiryu and Majima.
- Phase 1: Kiryu vs. Jo Amon (Brawler/Rush/Beast): Amon is incredibly fast and hits hard. Start with Rush style to dodge his attacks and land quick combos. Switch to Brawler for more damage when you have an opening. Use Beast style only when there are environmental objects to weaponize, but be wary of its slower movement. Conserve healing items like the Staminan Royale or Toughness Emperor for later phases.
- Phase 2: Majima vs. Jo Amon (Thug/Slugger/Breaker): Amon's patterns will shift slightly. Thug style offers a good balance of speed and power. Slugger can be effective for breaking his guard if you can land charged attacks, but be careful of its wind-up. Breaker is good for creating distance and landing quick hits, but Amon can punish its longer animations.
- Phase 3: Kiryu & Majima Tag Team vs. Jo Amon: This phase is a true test. You'll switch between characters. The key here is to exploit Amon's recovery animations after he attacks. Use one character to bait an attack, then quickly switch to the other to punish. Utilize Heat Actions from both characters strategically. Don't be afraid to use your most powerful healing items here.
Remember, these are just examples. Each Climax Battle presents unique challenges. Experiment with different styles, Heat Actions, and environmental interactions to find what works best for you!
