Weapon Types & Usage
While Kiryu's fists are formidable, the streets of Kamurocho and Okinawa often demand a more direct approach. Yakuza 3 offers a diverse arsenal of weapons, each with unique properties and ideal usage scenarios. Mastering these tools can turn the tide of even the toughest encounters.
Melee Weapons
These are your bread and butter for extending your reach and dealing significant damage. Most melee weapons have a limited durability, indicated by a bar next to their icon. Once durability runs out, the weapon breaks.
Blunt Weapons
- Bat: A common and effective weapon. Great for crowd control due to its wide swings. Look for them dropped by enemies or in convenience stores like Poppo.
- Traffic Cone: Surprisingly effective for a few hits, especially as a Heat Action trigger. Often found scattered around city streets.
- Signboard: Similar to the Traffic Cone, but with a wider swing and more damage. Excellent for clearing multiple weaker enemies. Keep an eye out for these near shops and restaurants.
- Golf Club: A powerful blunt weapon with good reach. Can be found in specific substories or purchased from weapon dealers later in the game.
- Bicycle: While cumbersome, a bicycle can be picked up and swung for massive damage, often knocking down multiple opponents. Best used when surrounded.
Usage Strategy: Blunt weapons excel at staggering enemies and setting up Heat Actions. Focus on wide swings against groups, and use charged attacks (hold Square) for single, tougher opponents.
Bladed Weapons
- Knife: Fast and precise, ideal for single-target damage. Enemies often drop these. Be cautious of their short reach.
- Katana: A powerful and iconic weapon. Deals high damage and has good reach. Katanas are rarer, often found in specific weapon shops or as rewards for challenging encounters. The Steel Katana is a good mid-game option.
- Machete: A heavier, slower bladed weapon with excellent damage and a wider arc than a knife. Can be devastating against unarmored foes.
Usage Strategy: Bladed weapons are best for quickly dispatching individual threats or bosses. Their speed allows for quick combos, and many have unique Heat Actions that can be devastating.
Firearms
Firearms offer ranged combat capabilities, allowing you to thin out enemy ranks before they get close. Ammunition is limited and often expensive, so use them wisely.
- Pistol: The most common firearm. Good for quick shots and interrupting enemy attacks. Can be purchased from the Dragon Palace weapon dealer in Kamurocho or found on certain enemies.
- Shotgun: Devastating at close range, capable of hitting multiple enemies. Slow to reload but incredibly powerful. Look for it in the more illicit weapon shops or as a rare drop.
- Assault Rifle: Offers rapid-fire capabilities, great for sustained damage against tough opponents or groups. Ammunition is a major concern here. Typically a late-game acquisition or found in specific missions.
Usage Strategy: Use firearms to create distance, interrupt charging enemies, or deal burst damage to bosses. Always aim for headshots for maximum efficiency. Conserve ammo for critical situations.
Explosives
These are situational but incredibly powerful for clearing out large groups of enemies or dealing massive damage to a single target.
- Grenade: Throws a small explosive that detonates after a short delay, damaging enemies in an area. Effective for flushing out enemies from cover or hitting clustered foes. Can be purchased from some weapon dealers.
- Molotov Cocktail: Creates a patch of fire that damages enemies over time. Excellent for area denial or preventing enemies from approaching.
Usage Strategy: Explosives are best used when enemies are tightly packed. Throw them into the middle of a brawl to inflict widespread damage and create openings.
Environmental Weapons
The streets of Yakuza 3 are littered with objects that Kiryu can pick up and use as improvised weapons. These are often free and replenish quickly.
- Chair/Stool: Common in restaurants and bars. Can be swung or thrown.
- Road Sign: Found on sidewalks. Good reach and damage.
- Trash Can: Can be swung or used for a powerful Heat Action.
- Cone/Pylon: Less damaging but plentiful.
Usage Strategy: Always be aware of your surroundings. If you're low on durability for your equipped weapon, or just want to save it, look for environmental objects. They are particularly good for initiating Heat Actions.
Weapon Durability & Repair
Most weapons in Yakuza 3 have a durability meter. Once it depletes, the weapon breaks and becomes unusable. You can repair weapons at certain locations:
- Kamiyama Works: Located in the back alleys of Kamurocho, this workshop can repair and even upgrade your weapons. Speak to the owner, and select the "Repair" option. The cost varies depending on the weapon's rarity and damage.
- Weapon Dealers: Some weapon dealers, particularly the more specialized ones, offer repair services alongside their inventory.
Pro Tip: Always keep an eye on your weapon's durability, especially before major boss fights. Repairing a weapon is almost always cheaper than buying a new one, particularly for rare items.
