Heat Actions

Heat Actions are Kiryu's signature finishing moves, devastating attacks that deal massive damage and often incapacitate opponents. Executing them requires a full or partially full Heat Gauge, the blue bar displayed below your health. The Heat Gauge fills as you land attacks, block, evade, and taunt enemies. Different Heat Actions consume varying amounts of Heat, so managing your gauge is crucial for maximizing your combat effectiveness.

Understanding the Heat Gauge

  • Filling the Gauge:
    • Attacking: Landing successful combos, especially charged attacks, will steadily increase your Heat.
    • Blocking/Evading: Successfully blocking or quickstepping away from enemy attacks also grants a small amount of Heat.
    • Taunting: Pressing the Taunt button (usually R2 or L2 depending on your control scheme) while near enemies will generate Heat, but leaves you vulnerable. Use this strategically when enemies are downed or at a distance.
    • Consumables: Certain drinks and food items purchased from convenience stores like Poppo or M Store, or restaurants, can instantly boost your Heat Gauge. Look for items with descriptions mentioning "Heat" or "Spirit."
  • Heat Levels: The Heat Gauge has multiple segments. Some Heat Actions require a full gauge, while others can be performed with just one or two segments filled. As your Heat Gauge fills, Kiryu's aura will change color, indicating the current level of Heat available.

Executing Heat Actions

When the conditions for a Heat Action are met (sufficient Heat, correct enemy state, proper positioning, and sometimes a specific environmental object), a blue prompt will appear on screen, typically indicating the Triangle button. Pressing Triangle at this moment will trigger the cinematic Heat Action.

Types of Heat Actions and Strategies

Heat Actions are incredibly varied, depending on Kiryu's fighting style, enemy position, and environmental factors. Mastering them is key to dominating fights.

1. Basic Grapple Heat Actions

These are some of the most common and reliable Heat Actions. They typically require a full Heat Gauge.

  • Essence of Reversal:
    • Conditions: Enemy is grabbed from the front.
    • Execution: Grab an enemy (Circle), then press Triangle.
    • Strategy: Excellent for single, tough opponents or quickly eliminating weaker ones. Can be chained after a successful guard break or stun.
  • Essence of Headlock:
    • Conditions: Enemy is grabbed from behind.
    • Execution: Get behind an enemy, grab them (Circle), then press Triangle.
    • Strategy: Ideal for enemies who frequently dodge or when you manage to circle around them during a combo.
  • Essence of Crushing:
    • Conditions: Enemy is downed on the ground.
    • Execution: Knock an enemy down, then stand over them and press Triangle.
    • Strategy: A great way to follow up on combos that end with a knockdown, ensuring extra damage while they're vulnerable.
2. Environmental Heat Actions

These Heat Actions utilize objects in the environment to inflict massive damage. Always be aware of your surroundings!

  • Essence of Wall Crush:
    • Conditions: Grab an enemy and be near a wall.
    • Execution: Grab an enemy (Circle), then move towards a wall until the Triangle prompt appears.
    • Strategy: Effective in tight spaces or when fighting multiple enemies near walls. Can stun other enemies caught in the splash damage.
  • Essence of Pole Dancing (or similar):
    • Conditions: Grab an enemy and be near a street pole, traffic light, or similar vertical object.
    • Execution: Grab an enemy (Circle), then move towards the object until the Triangle prompt appears.
    • Strategy: Look for these objects in Kamurocho's Nakamichi Street or Okinawa's Ryukyu Street. They often deal significant damage and can clear space.
  • Essence of the Table Flip:
    • Conditions: Grab an enemy and be near a table (e.g., in a restaurant or bar).
    • Execution: Grab an enemy (Circle), then move towards a table until the Triangle prompt appears.
    • Strategy: Highly satisfying and deals good damage. Useful in locations like the Orchid Palace or the various bars.
  • Essence of the Bicycle:
    • Conditions: An enemy is downed, and a bicycle is nearby.
    • Execution: Knock an enemy down, then stand near a bicycle until the Triangle prompt appears.
    • Strategy: Bicycles are common in both Kamurocho and Okinawa. This is a powerful ground finisher.
3. Weapon Heat Actions

When Kiryu picks up a weapon, new Heat Actions become available, often tailored to the specific weapon type.

  • Essence of the Bat:
    • Conditions: Kiryu is holding a baseball bat (or similar blunt weapon) and an enemy is nearby.
    • Execution: With a bat equipped, attack an enemy until the Triangle prompt appears.
    • Strategy: Bats can be found in various locations or purchased from weapon shops. This Heat Action usually involves a powerful swing that can knock enemies flying.
  • Essence of the Knife:
    • Conditions: Kiryu is holding a knife and an enemy is nearby.
    • Execution: With a knife equipped, attack an enemy until the Triangle prompt appears.
    • Strategy: Knives are quick and precise. Their Heat Actions often involve rapid stabs or a powerful finishing thrust.
  • Essence of the Gun:
    • Conditions: Kiryu is holding a firearm and an enemy is nearby.
    • Execution: With a gun equipped, target an enemy until the Triangle prompt appears.
    • Strategy: Gun Heat Actions are rare and often involve a close-range execution shot. Conserve ammo for these powerful finishers against bosses or tough enemies.
4. Unique Heat Actions (Boss Fights & Specific Situations)

Some Heat Actions are only available during specific boss encounters or under unique circumstances. Pay attention to the prompts!

  • Climax Heat Actions: These are often triggered during boss fights when the boss is heavily damaged and in a specific state. They are incredibly powerful, cinematic, and often signal the end of the fight.
  • Counter Heat Actions: Certain enemies or attacks can be countered with a Heat Action if you time a dodge or block perfectly, leading to a unique counter-attack.

Tips for Maximizing Heat Action Usage

  • Observe the Prompt: Always keep an eye out for the blue Triangle prompt. It's your signal to unleash a devastating attack.
  • Positioning is Key: Many Heat Actions depend on Kiryu's position relative to the enemy and the environment. Practice moving enemies into advantageous spots.
  • Upgrade Your Abilities: Visit the various training masters (e.g., Komaki, the homeless man) to learn new Heat Actions and improve existing ones. These upgrades are crucial for expanding your combat repertoire.
  • Heat Orb Management: Don't be afraid to use Heat Orbs (found in the environment or dropped by enemies) to quickly fill your gauge for a crucial Heat Action.
  • Experiment: The best way to learn all the Heat Actions is to try them out! Experiment with different weapons, environmental objects, and enemy states to discover new ways to finish off your foes.
