Growth System
Yakuza 4 features a robust growth system that allows each of the four protagonists to develop their unique fighting styles and abilities. Unlike previous entries, experience points (EXP) are not a single, unified currency. Instead, characters earn different types of EXP based on their actions, which are then spent to unlock new skills and upgrade existing ones. Mastering this system is crucial for tackling the game's tougher challenges, including the Coliseum and Amon.
Earning Experience Points (EXP)
Each character accumulates five distinct types of EXP:
- Strength EXP (Red): Primarily earned through combat, especially by performing Heat Actions, finishing blows, and defeating stronger enemies.
- Agility EXP (Blue): Gained by dodging attacks, performing quicksteps, and successfully executing QTEs during combat.
- Technique EXP (Yellow): Awarded for using several different moves, parrying attacks, and successfully guarding against damage.
- Spirit EXP (Green): Acquired by completing substories, engaging in minigames, and making progress in the main story. This is often the most versatile EXP type.
- Charm EXP (Purple): Earned by interacting with hostesses, purchasing items from certain shops, and completing specific side activities. While less directly tied to combat, it can unlock useful passive abilities.
To maximize your EXP gains, diversify your activities. Don't just focus on combat; explore Kamurocho, complete every substory you encounter, and try out the various minigames. Eating at restaurants also provides a small boost to various EXP types, so keep your stomach full!
The Skill Menu
Access the Skill Menu for each character via the main menu (press START, then navigate to "Skills"). Here, you'll find a tree-like structure of abilities categorized into:
- Heat Actions: Powerful, cinematic finishers that deal significant damage. Prioritize unlocking Heat Actions that suit your playstyle and character. For example, Kiryu's "Essence of Mashing" is a fantastic early-game crowd control Heat Action.
- Combat Moves: New attacks, combos, and defensive maneuvers. Look for upgrades to basic combos, new grapple techniques, and improved evasive actions. Akiyama benefits greatly from unlocking his rapid kick chains.
- Abilities: Passive buffs, such as increased health, stronger attacks, faster Heat Gauge generation, or improved item effectiveness. These are often crucial for long-term survival. Saejima's "Iron Guard" ability significantly reduces damage taken while guarding.
- Revelations: Unique, powerful techniques learned through specific mini-quests. These are often character-specific and require finding a "Revelation" event in Kamurocho. For instance, Tanimura can learn "Essence of Bell Ringing" after witnessing a specific event near the Theater Square.
Spending EXP and Prioritization
Each skill requires a certain amount of one or more EXP types to unlock. You cannot unlock a skill if you do not have enough of the required EXP. Here's a general strategy for spending your hard-earned points:
- Early Game (Chapters 1-4 for each character): Focus on core combat enhancements.
- Health Upgrades: Always a good investment to increase survivability.
- Basic Combo Extenders: More hits mean more damage and faster Heat generation.
- Heat Gauge Boosts: Allows for more frequent use of powerful Heat Actions.
- Character-Specific Staples: For Akiyama, prioritize his speed and evasion. For Saejima, focus on raw power and durability. Tanimura should invest in parries and counter-attacks. Kiryu benefits from a balanced approach, enhancing his brawler style.
- Mid Game (Chapters 5-8 for each character): Start diversifying and specializing.
- Revelation Skills: Actively seek out and complete the Revelation events. These often provide significant power spikes.
- Advanced Heat Actions: Unlock Heat Actions that target specific enemy types or provide area-of-effect damage.
- Weapon Skills: If you frequently use weapons, invest in skills that improve their durability or damage.
- Passive Buffs: Look for abilities that increase item drop rates, reduce damage from specific attacks, or improve recovery.
- Late Game (Final Chapters & Post-Game): Max out everything.
- All Health/Attack/Defense Upgrades: Ensure your characters are as robust as possible.
- All Heat Actions: Having a full arsenal of Heat Actions provides tactical flexibility.
- Completionist Goals: Unlock every skill for every character, especially if aiming for 100% completion or tackling the Ultimate Match challenges.
Training and Mentors
Beyond the Skill Menu, each character has unique training opportunities that unlock powerful new abilities or upgrade existing ones. These often require completing specific side quests or reaching certain milestones.
- Akiyama: Can train with Nair at the Sky Finance office. Completing his training sessions will unlock advanced kick techniques and evasive maneuvers.
- Saejima: Trains with Master in the underground area of the sewers. This training focuses on increasing his raw power, grapple techniques, and defensive capabilities.
- Tanimura: His mentor is Nakamura, found at the police station. Nakamura teaches Tanimura advanced parry, counter, and arrest techniques, crucial for his fighting style.
- Kiryu: His training is with Komaki, located in the back alleys of Purgatory. Komaki teaches Kiryu his legendary Komaki Style techniques, including the Komaki Parry, Komaki Tiger Drop, and Komaki Cat-Like Reflexes, which are among the most powerful skills in the game.
Actionable Tip: Prioritize completing these mentor training sequences as soon as they become available for each character. The skills learned are often game-changers and significantly enhance your character's combat effectiveness.
By strategically earning and spending your EXP, and diligently pursuing mentor training, you'll transform your protagonists into unstoppable forces capable of facing any challenge Kamurocho throws at them.
