Combat Controls
Mastering the combat system in Yakuza 4 is crucial for surviving the mean streets of Kamurocho. Each of the four protagonists brings a unique fighting style to the table, but the fundamental controls remain consistent. This section will break down the core combat mechanics, allowing you to chain devastating combos and unleash powerful Heat Actions.
Basic Attacks & Movement
- Left Analog Stick: Movement - Use this to navigate the environment and position yourself during combat. Strategic movement is key to avoiding incoming attacks and setting up your own.
- Right Analog Stick: Camera Control - Adjust your camera angle to keep enemies in view and assess the battlefield.
- X Button (Square): Light Attack - This is your primary attack button. Repeated presses will unleash a rapid flurry of punches or kicks. These attacks are fast and can be chained into stronger combos.
- Y Button (Triangle): Heavy Attack - A slower, more powerful attack. Heavy attacks often break enemy guards or launch them into the air, setting them up for further punishment.
- X, X, Y (Square, Square, Triangle): Basic Combo - A fundamental combo that starts with light attacks and finishes with a heavy blow. Experiment with different light and heavy attack combinations to discover unique character-specific sequences.
- A Button (X): Dodge/Dash - Tap to quickly sidestep or roll away from attacks. Holding the button will allow you to sprint, useful for closing distances or escaping dangerous situations.
- B Button (Circle): Grab/Throw - When close to an enemy, press B to grab them. Once grabbed, you can often perform a throw by pressing B again, or unleash a grab-specific Heat Action (see below).
- L1 Button (L1): Lock-On - Press and hold to lock onto a specific enemy. This is invaluable for focusing your attacks and ensuring your combos connect. Release to unlock.
- R1 Button (R1): Guard - Hold to block incoming attacks. Guarding reduces damage and can prevent you from being staggered. However, some powerful attacks can break your guard.
Heat Actions & Special Moves
Heat Actions are cinematic, devastating finishers that can turn the tide of any battle. They consume your Heat Gauge, which fills up as you land attacks and take damage.
- Heat Gauge (Blue Bar): Located at the top left of your screen, this gauge fills during combat. When it's glowing, you're ready to unleash a Heat Action.
- Y Button (Triangle) (when Heat Gauge is full and prompt appears): Heat Action - When your Heat Gauge is sufficiently filled and you're in the correct context (e.g., near a wall, holding a weapon, or an enemy is stunned), a "Heat Action" prompt will appear above your Heat Gauge. Press Y to execute a powerful, context-sensitive move.
- Environmental Heat Actions: Look for glowing blue objects in the environment, such as bicycles, traffic cones, or even walls. When an enemy is near these objects and your Heat Gauge is full, a Heat Action prompt will appear, allowing you to use the environment to your advantage.
- Weapon Heat Actions: Many weapons found throughout Kamurocho have unique Heat Actions. Pick up a Baton from a fallen thug or a Signboard from a restaurant, and when your Heat Gauge is full, you can often perform a special attack with it.
- Grab Heat Actions: After grabbing an enemy with B, if your Heat Gauge is full, you may see a Heat Action prompt to perform a powerful throw or slam.
Advanced Techniques
- Quickstep (A + Left Analog Stick): While guarding (R1), quickly tap A and a direction on the Left Analog Stick to perform a quickstep. This allows for rapid repositioning while maintaining a defensive stance.
- Weapon Pick-Up (B Button): While near a weapon on the ground, press B to pick it up. Weapons offer increased damage and unique attack patterns. Remember that weapons have durability and will break after a certain number of uses.
- Finishing Blows (Y after a combo): After a string of light attacks, pressing Y will often result in a powerful finishing blow, knocking enemies down or sending them flying.
- Taunt (Up on D-Pad): Taunting can draw enemy attention and sometimes even slightly increase your Heat Gauge, though it leaves you vulnerable.
Experiment with each character's unique fighting style to discover their strengths and weaknesses. Akiyama's rapid kicks, Saejima's brute force, Tanimura's parries, and Kiryu's balanced approach all require different strategies to master. Practice these controls in random encounters to become a true legend of Kamurocho!
