Unlockables & Post-Game Content
Congratulations, Dragon of Dojima! Completing the main story in Yakuza 4 is just the beginning. Kamurocho still holds many secrets, challenges, and opportunities for the truly dedicated player. This section will guide you through all the unlockables and extensive post-game content available after the credits roll.
Premium Adventure
Upon completing the final chapter, you'll unlock Premium Adventure. This mode allows you to freely roam Kamurocho with any of the four protagonists (Kazuma Kiryu, Taiga Saejima, Shun Akiyama, and Masayoshi Tanimura) at any time. All substories, minigames, and side activities that you missed during the main story will be available. You can switch between characters by visiting the New Serena bar and speaking to the bartender. This is the ideal mode for:
- Completing Missed Substories: Many substories are character-specific or only become available after certain story points. Use Premium Adventure to track down and finish any you skipped.
- Maxing Out Character Abilities: Continue earning experience and completing training with each character to unlock all their Heat Actions, abilities, and upgrades.
- Collecting All Items: Search for remaining Locker Keys, complete weapon crafting, and acquire all equipment.
- Achieving Minigame Master: Dedicate time to mastering all minigames, from batting cages and fishing to mahjong and shogi, to earn valuable completion points and unique rewards.
Premium New Game
For those seeking a fresh challenge or wanting to experience the story again with an advantage, Premium New Game is your answer. This mode allows you to start a brand new playthrough from the beginning, carrying over most of your progress from your completed save file. Here's what transfers:
- Character Levels and Abilities: All four protagonists will retain their acquired experience, unlocked skills, and upgraded stats. This makes early game encounters significantly easier.
- Money (Yen): Your accumulated wealth will carry over, allowing you to purchase expensive equipment and items from the start.
- Items and Equipment: All weapons, armor, accessories, and consumable items stored in your inventory or item box will be available. This includes powerful gear like the Dragon God Amulet or the Sacred Tree Armor if you managed to craft them.
- Completion List Progress: Your progress on the Completion List (substories, minigames, food/drink, etc.) will be retained, making it easier to aim for 100% completion on a second run.
- Coliseum Progress: Any fighters unlocked and progress made in the Coliseum will carry over.
What does NOT carry over: Story progress, specific story-related key items, and certain temporary buffs or status effects.
Ultimate Match Mode
Unlocking Ultimate Match Mode requires you to complete the main story. This mode presents a series of intense, pre-set combat challenges designed to test your mastery of each character's fighting style. There are several categories of Ultimate Matches:
- Melee Challenges: Standard combat scenarios against waves of enemies or specific boss encounters.
- Weapon Challenges: Fights where you are restricted to using certain weapons or must defeat enemies with environmental objects.
- Survival Challenges: Endurance tests against increasingly difficult opponents.
- Boss Rush: Face off against a gauntlet of the game's toughest bosses back-to-back.
- Character-Specific Challenges: Each protagonist has unique challenges tailored to their fighting style. For example, Saejima might have challenges focused on grappling and heavy attacks, while Akiyama's challenges could emphasize quick combos and evasions.
Successfully completing Ultimate Matches often rewards you with significant amounts of experience, rare items, and even unique equipment that cannot be obtained elsewhere. Some challenges might even unlock special Heat Actions or abilities for your characters.
Secret Bosses & Hidden Encounters
Beyond the main narrative, Kamurocho hides a few truly formidable opponents. These encounters are typically unlocked through specific conditions in Premium Adventure:
- Jo Amon: The legendary hitman of the Amon clan makes his return. To challenge Jo Amon, you must first complete all 60 substories across all four protagonists. Once all substories are done, you will receive a message or an event will trigger, leading you to his location, usually in the sewers beneath Purgatory. Be prepared for an extremely difficult fight; he is arguably the toughest opponent in the game. Defeating him often yields the powerful Amon's Sunglasses or other high-tier accessories.
- Other Amon Clan Members: Depending on the version of the game, there might be other Amon clan members (e.g., Kazuya Amon for Saejima, Jiro Amon for Akiyama, Sango Amon for Tanimura) who appear after completing specific character-related substory chains. These fights are also challenging and offer valuable rewards.
Completion List Rewards
The Completion List, accessible from the pause menu, tracks nearly every activity in the game. Striving for 100% completion is a massive undertaking but offers substantial rewards:
- CP (Completion Points): Earned for completing various tasks, these points can be exchanged at the Kamiyama Works shop for unique items, powerful weapons, and even some of the best defensive gear in the game. Prioritize items like the War God Talisman (unlimited Heat) or the Sacred Tree Armor.
- Trophies/Achievements: Many trophies are tied directly to completing specific sections of the Completion List or reaching 100% overall.
- Sense of Accomplishment: Fully mastering Yakuza 4 and seeing that 100% on the Completion List is a reward in itself for any dedicated fan.
Remember, patience and persistence are key to unlocking everything Yakuza 4 has to offer. Good luck, and enjoy your extended stay in Kamurocho!
