Grinding for Lives
In Zelda II, extra lives are a precious commodity, especially as you delve deeper into Hyrule's perilous dungeons. Unlike many other Zelda titles, a Game Over sends you back to the beginning of the game (or the last palace you completed, if you've used the "Continue" option). This makes accumulating extra lives a crucial strategy for survival. Here's how to efficiently grind for those invaluable 1-Up Dolls.
Early Game Grinding: Parapa Desert
Once you've acquired the Candle from the cave east of the starting area, the Parapa Desert becomes your first reliable grinding spot. This area is teeming with easy-to-defeat enemies that drop experience points (EXP) and occasionally, a 1-Up Doll.
- Location: The desert region directly east of the starting point, accessible after obtaining the Candle.
- Enemies: Primarily Bots and Moblins. Bots are slow and can be defeated with a single sword slash. Moblins are a bit tougher but still manageable.
- Strategy:
- Enter the Parapa Desert screen.
- Defeat all visible enemies. Focus on Bots for quick EXP and potential 1-Up drops.
- Exit the screen to the left or right, then immediately re-enter to respawn all enemies.
- Repeat this process. You'll gain significant EXP, helping you level up your Attack, Magic, and Life, and frequently encounter 1-Up Dolls as enemy drops.
- Tip: If you're low on magic, use the "Life" spell to recover health, allowing you to stay in the grinding area longer.
Mid-Game Grinding: Death Mountain Approach
Once you gain access to Death Mountain, the screens leading up to it offer a more challenging but rewarding grinding opportunity. The enemies here provide more EXP per kill, and 1-Up Dolls are still a possibility.
- Location: The screens on the overworld map directly preceding the entrance to Death Mountain.
- Enemies: Expect to encounter more aggressive enemies like Iron Knuckles and Lizalfos. These enemies yield higher EXP.
- Strategy:
- Navigate to the Death Mountain approach screens.
- Engage and defeat the tougher enemies. Practice your down-thrust and up-thrust attacks for efficient combat.
- Exit and re-enter the screen to respawn enemies.
- Continue until you've accumulated a comfortable number of extra lives or need to progress.
- Tip: Ensure your Attack and Life levels are sufficiently high before attempting this area, as the enemies hit harder. Having the "Shield" spell can also be very beneficial here.
Late Game Grinding: Great Palace Entrance
For the ultimate grind, the screens just outside the Great Palace offer the highest concentration of high-EXP enemies. This is ideal for topping off your lives before the final challenge.
- Location: The overworld screens immediately surrounding the Great Palace.
- Enemies: Darknuts, Red Iron Knuckles, and other powerful foes will be present. These grant substantial experience.
- Strategy:
- Travel to the Great Palace entrance.
- Engage the elite enemies. Mastering their attack patterns is key to surviving these encounters.
- use your most powerful spells, such as "Thunder" or "Fire," to clear screens quickly if you have ample magic.
- Repeat the screen exit/re-entry method to continuously respawn enemies and farm for 1-Up Dolls.
- Tip: By this point, your Attack, Magic, and Life should be near maximum. Don't be afraid to use your magic to make these encounters safer and faster.
Remember, patience is a virtue in Zelda II. A little time spent grinding for lives can save you a lot of frustration from repeated Game Overs, especially during boss battles and the later palaces.
