Covenants (Detailed Guide)
Covenants in Bloodborne represent allegiances to various factions within Yharnam and beyond. Joining a covenant grants you a specific Caryll Rune, which, when equipped, provides unique passive bonuses and alters your online interactions. You can only have one covenant rune equipped at a time. This detailed guide will walk you through how to find and join each covenant, along with their associated benefits.
The Hunter of Hunters
This covenant is dedicated to purging corrupt hunters who have succumbed to the beastly scourge. Joining offers a unique perspective on the hunt and rewards those who uphold its grim duty.
- How to Join:
- Progress through the game until you meet Eileen the Crow in Central Yharnam. She is initially found on a ledge above the sewers, accessible by breaking some barrels near the first shortcut gate.
- Speak with her and exhaust her dialogue.
- Later, find her again in the Cathedral Ward, outside the Oedon Chapel. She will be standing near the entrance.
- After defeating Rom, the Vacuous Spider, return to the Grand Cathedral where Vicar Amelia was fought. You will find Eileen injured on the steps.
- Speak with her and agree to help her hunt the Bloody Crow of Cainhurst.
- Defeat the Bloody Crow of Cainhurst in the Grand Cathedral. This is a challenging fight; prepare for a fast, aggressive opponent.
- After the fight, speak to Eileen one last time. She will give you the Hunter Rune, signifying your induction into the Hunter of Hunters covenant.
- Covenant Rune: Hunter Rune (Increases stamina recovery speed).
- Online Interaction: When summoned as a co-operator, you have a chance to be summoned to hunt other hostile players (Vilebloods).
The Executioners
The Executioners are a militant faction of the Healing Church, sworn to eradicate the Vilebloods of Cainhurst. Their symbol is a wheel, representing their unwavering resolve.
- How to Join:
- Defeat Vicar Amelia in the Grand Cathedral.
- Acquire the Cainhurst Summons item. This can be found in Iosefka's Clinic. To reach it, you must enter the clinic from the Forbidden Woods. From the Forbidden Woods lamp, head left and follow the path until you find a cave with a ladder. Climb the ladder and navigate the rooftops to reach the back entrance of the clinic. The summons are on a table in the clinic's main room.
- Take the Cainhurst Summons to the obelisk in Hemwick Charnel Lane, located in the clearing past the Witch of Hemwick's boss arena.
- A cutscene will play, and a carriage will transport you to Cainhurst Castle.
- Explore Cainhurst Castle until you reach the boss, Martyr Logarius. Defeat him.
- After defeating Logarius, equip his crown, the Crown of Illusions, and approach the throne behind his boss arena. A secret path will open.
- Follow the path to meet Annalise, Queen of the Vilebloods. Do NOT bow to her or join her covenant yet if you wish to join the Executioners first.
- Instead, return to the Hunter's Dream and speak with Alfred, who is usually found near the entrance to the Forbidden Woods or later, near the entrance to the Healing Church Workshop.
- Tell Alfred about Annalise. He will then move to the throne room in Cainhurst Castle.
- Return to Cainhurst and find Alfred in the throne room. He will brutally kill Annalise.
- After Alfred has completed his task, speak to him again. He will give you the Radiant Rune, inducting you into the Executioners.
- Covenant Rune: Radiant Rune (Increases health recovery from Rally potential).
- Online Interaction: When summoned as a co-operator, you have a chance to be summoned to hunt other hostile players (Vilebloods).
The Vilebloods of Cainhurst
The Vilebloods are an ancient aristocratic lineage, cursed with forbidden blood. They seek Blood Dregs from other hunters to offer to their queen, Annalise.
- How to Join:
- Follow steps 1-6 for joining the Executioners to reach Annalise, Queen of the Vilebloods, in Cainhurst Castle.
- When you meet Annalise, kneel before her and accept her offer to join the Vilebloods.
- She will grant you the Corruption Rune.
- Covenant Rune: Corruption Rune (Recovers HP upon successfully performing a Visceral Attack).
- Online Interaction: When equipped, defeating other players in PvP (either as an invader or by defeating an invading player) will grant you Blood Dregs, which can be offered to Annalise to increase your covenant rank.
The League
Led by Valtr, the League is a group of hunters dedicated to cleansing the world of vermin, both literal and metaphorical. They value cooperation and shared purpose.
- How to Join:
- Acquire the Impurity Rune. This rune is found in the Forbidden Woods. From the Forbidden Woods lamp, head straight until you reach the large mill with the waterwheel. Near the waterwheel, there's a hidden path leading to a cave. Follow this path to find Valtr, the League Master.
- Speak with Valtr and agree to join the League. He will give you the Impurity Rune.
- Covenant Rune: Impurity Rune (Increases maximum HP when in co-op mode).
- Online Interaction: When summoned as a co-operator, you have a chance to be summoned to hunt other hostile players (Vilebloods). Defeating certain enemies (often larger, more beastly foes) while the Impurity Rune is equipped can yield Vermin, which can be crushed to increase your League rank.
The Choir
The Choir is the highest echelon of the Healing Church, focused on seeking out the Eldritch Truth. Their symbol represents their pursuit of cosmic knowledge.
- How to Join:
- Defeat the One Reborn in Yahar'gul, Unseen Village.
- Proceed through the area until you reach the Upper Cathedral Ward. To access this area, you need the Upper Cathedral Key. This key is found in Yahar'gul, Unseen Village, in a cage on the upper level of the building where you fight the One Reborn.
- Use the key to open the locked door at the top of the Healing Church Workshop tower (accessible from the Cathedral Ward lamp by taking the elevator up).
- Navigate the Upper Cathedral Ward, defeat the Celestial Emissary boss.
- After the Celestial Emissary, proceed to the next area and defeat Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos.
- After defeating Ebrietas, interact with the altar in her boss arena. You will receive the Communion Rune, signifying your membership in the Choir.
- Covenant Rune: Communion Rune (Increases the maximum number of Blood Vials you can carry).
- Online Interaction: Primarily focused on PvE cooperation and lore, rather than direct PvP covenant mechanics.
The School of Mensis
While not a traditional joinable covenant with a specific rune, the School of Mensis represents a significant faction in Bloodborne's lore, deeply involved in the pursuit of the Great Ones and their secrets. Their influence is felt throughout the Nightmare of Mensis.
- How to "Join": There is no formal joining process or specific covenant rune for the School of Mensis. Their presence is explored through the narrative and environment of the Nightmare of Mensis.
- Associated Items/Concepts: Mensis Cage (headwear), Brain of Mensis, Mergo's Wet Nurse.
- Significance: Understanding the School of Mensis is crucial for grasping the deeper lore of Bloodborne, particularly concerning the Paleblood Hunt and the nature of the Great Ones.
