Guide to Cave Story's final boss gauntlet: Misery, the Undead Dog, and the Doctor. Learn strategies, attack patterns, and weaknesses to survive the endgame.

You've reached the endgame of Cave Story. After a brief respite in the Balcony and a chance to save and heal in the Prefab House, you'll head to the Throne Room for a series of challenging boss fights.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
In the Balcony, head right and defeat two frenzied Mimigas. Continue right past the helicopter to a small building.
  2. 2
Enter the Prefab House. Save your game and heal at the bed. You can inspect the bookshelf for a note from Professor Booster. Exit back to the Balcony.
  3. 3
Head right again on the Balcony. Defeat another pair of frenzied Mimigas, one of which is Igor-sized. You can also choose to boost over them.
  4. 4
Continue right to find an opening leading to the Throne Room. Ignore this door for now.
  5. 5
Boost upwards along the wall to find a supply depot with hearts, missile refills, and weapon energy capsules. Ensure your Polar Star and Missile Launcher are upgraded, and your Blade is at least Level 2 or 3 if you have it.
  6. 6
Continue climbing the wall to the top of the Balcony. Find the sign and boost directly upwards into the clouds to be teleported to the Throne Room entrance. Alternatively, boost left from the sign and then up to reach the Prefab House entrance. Save one last time, then enter the Throne Room.

Throne Room - Boss Fights:

Before entering the Throne Room, a word of caution: avoid using your Life Pot during the final boss fights if you intend to enter Sacred Ground later. It's also recommended to conserve missiles for a bonus stage.

Boss: Misery

Strategy:

  • Misery is the first of three consecutive boss battles. Play conservatively to save health and resources for the remaining fights.
  • Recommended weapons: Polar Star upgrades, Nemesis, Level 2 Blade.
  • During the first half of the fight, stay on the ground and attack from below. Dodge her projectile attacks.
  • Misery attacks by firing five black balls in a straight line, summoning three slow-moving black balls that turn into lightning bolts, and dropping a giant block. All attacks can be dodged by moving.
  • When Misery's health is low, she surrounds herself with two rotating black rings that block attacks. These rings transform into orange bats when she teleports. Shooting the bats may drop power-ups.
  • As her health drops further, she will summon four rings instead of two.
  • Option 1 (Safe): Continue attacking from the ground, shooting through the gaps in the rings. This is slower but safer.
  • Option 2 (Aggressive): Boost into the region inside the rings for point-blank shots. This requires more precise dodging and risks contact damage.
