The R&D system in FragPunk is multifaceted, allowing you to enhance your gear and unlock new capabilities through a combination of acquired schematics, salvaged components, and invested research points. You'll primarily interact with R&D terminals found in safe zones, faction hubs, and specialized workshops scattered throughout Neo-Veridia. The core of R&D involves two main branches: Weaponry and Augmentations. Under Weaponry, you can research new ammo types, such as Plasma Rounds for increased damage against armored targets or EMP Rounds to disable robotic enemies. You can also unlock advanced weapon modifications, including scopes for improved accuracy, extended magazines for sustained fire, and specialized barrels that alter projectile behavior. For example, a Ricochet Barrel can turn your standard rifle into a room-clearing tool. Augmentations focus on enhancing your character's innate abilities. This includes researching new cybernetic implants that grant passive bonuses like increased health regeneration or faster movement speed, as well as active abilities such as short-range teleports or deployable energy shields. To progress in R&D, you'll need to gather various resources. Scrap Metal and Circuit Boards are common, found on defeated enemies and in loot containers. Rarer components, like Quantum Filaments and Bio-Gel, are often found in high-security areas, guarded by elite enemies, or obtained as rewards for completing challenging side quests.
