How to Beat Sao (Hidden Cove Tournament)
The Hidden Cove Tournament in Ghost of Tsushima features a challenging duel against Sao, a formidable opponent who tests Jin Sakai's mastery of swordplay. This boss fight requires precise timing, effective use of stances, and strategic dodges to overcome. Sao is a skilled warrior, and a direct, aggressive approach will likely lead to defeat. Patience and observation are your greatest allies here.
Before the fight, ensure Jin is well-prepared. It's advisable to have unlocked at least the first two stances (Stone and Water) and ideally the third (Wind). Having a good supply of healing items (like Healing Poultices) and potentially some Ghost Weapons like Kunai or Smoke Bombs can also be beneficial, though this is primarily a sword duel.
The fight begins with Sao initiating combat. He is quick and employs a mix of swift slashes and powerful, telegraphed heavy attacks. Your primary goal is to parry or dodge his attacks and exploit the openings he leaves behind. The Stone Stance is generally effective against his faster, single-hit attacks, allowing you to parry them and counter. The Water Stance is excellent for deflecting his rapid combos, giving you opportunities to strike back.
Sao's attack patterns can be broken down into a few key types:
- Quick Slashes: These are often delivered in short, rapid bursts. Parrying these with the Stone Stance is ideal. If you miss the parry, a well-timed dodge to the side or backward is your next best option.
- Heavy Overhead Smash: Sao will often telegraph this with a wind-up. This attack deals significant damage. It's best to dodge this to the side just as he swings. After dodging, you usually have a brief window to land one or two hits.
- Spinning Attack: He may perform a spinning attack that covers a small area. Dodging backward or using a well-timed parry can counter this.
- Unblockable Attacks: Like most skilled duelists, Sao will occasionally use unblockable attacks, indicated by a red glint. These cannot be parried and must be dodged. Pay close attention to his animations to identify these.
Your strategy should be to focus on defense and counter-attacks. Let Sao come to you and bait him into attacking. When you successfully parry or dodge an attack, immediately follow up with a few strikes. Don't get greedy; landing two or three hits and then backing off to reassess is safer than trying to land a full combo and getting punished.
If you find yourself taking too much damage, use a healing item. The duel can be paused to use these. If you have Ghost Weapons available, a well-placed Kunai can stagger Sao, giving you a brief opening, or a Smoke Bomb can be used to disengage and heal if you're in a tight spot.
The key to defeating Sao is patience and learning his tells. Each successful parry and dodge builds your resolve, which can be used for powerful Resolve Arts.
