Master Haunting Ground's Battle Mode with this guide. Learn commands for Hewie, understand Panic Status effects, and discover strategies for survival against pursuers.

Hewie Commands:

  1. Attack: Push the right Analog Stick upwards to tell Hewie to attack the enemy.
  2. Cease Attack: Push the right Analog Stick downwards to tell Hewie to stop attacking.
  3. Stay: Press R3 to tell Hewie to remain stationary.
  4. Critical Attack: Press R3 to make Hewie stay still. When the enemy is in front of Hewie and he starts growling, push the right Analog Stick upwards to command him to attack. This is most effective when Hewie is facing the enemy's back, though lining them up can be difficult.

Panic Status:

Panic Status occurs when Fiona becomes frightened. There are two levels: MINOR and MAJOR.

  • MINOR Panic Status: Indicated by increased screen contrast, blurring of the environment and characters, and Fiona's heartbeat sound.
  • MAJOR Panic Status: Indicated by inverted screen colors, a high-pitched scream from Fiona, a paused moment with controller vibration (if enabled), and extreme contrast/blurring upon resuming gameplay. Fiona will run uncontrollably, trip, and become vulnerable if she falls too many times. Her menu cannot be accessed during this status.

Triggers for MINOR Panic:

  • Looking at gruesome or creepy things (e.g., blood).
  • Being attacked by a pursuer or enemy.
  • Nearly being hit by a pursuer's attack.
  • Slightly brushing past a pursuer.
  • A pursuer performing a creepy action (e.g., laughing).
  • Possessing certain items.
  • Being hit by a Luminessant or a Failure.
  • Attacking certain pursuers.

Managing MINOR Panic:

  1. Open your menu.
  2. Use panic-calming items like Lavender.
  3. If no calming items are available, stand still, hide, or continue playing; panic will subside over time.
  4. WARNING: If Fiona possesses an item that induces panic (e.g., Mandragora), calming items will not work.
  5. Unlocked plate-key items from previous playthroughs can offer convenience.

Triggers for MAJOR Panic:

  • Repeated attacks by a pursuer.
  • Attacks from strong or multiple Luminessants.
  • Being grabbed by pursuers or some minor enemies for too long.
  • Certain cutscenes.

Managing MAJOR Panic:

  1. Run away from the enemy, trying to avoid obstacles.
  2. Call Hewie for assistance to create an opening.
  3. If Fiona falls, wiggle the control stick to recover faster.
  4. MAJOR panic status lasts about 20 seconds and dissipates naturally.

Hiding and Distracting:

When being chased, the words "Wait a second!! What's that?!" will appear in orange near hiding spots or distractions. Return to this spot and press the action button to hide or interact. If the pursuer is already in the room, the prompt will not appear. Common hiding places include beds and wardrobes. Overusing a hiding spot may cause pursuers to find Fiona easily. If no hiding place is found, Fiona can crouch.
