Now, usually, winning a battle has consequences that are more political than anything. Your troops might push forward a bit, theirs might fall back, and a province might change hands. That's often it. These can be important turning points, sure – maybe you finally crossed a river or broke through a heavily defended line – but they don't usually lead to an immediate victory.

However, when you manage to defeat an army and bring some of its divisions down to zero strength, that's a much bigger deal.
