Alright, let's talk about The First Warden. This guy's your first real roadblock, but don't sweat it. If you can manage to beat him without taking a single hit, you'll snag a legendary version of the 'Persistence' Greatsword. That's a sweet bonus, so aim for it if you're feeling confident!

• Melee Swings: He'll swing his weapon up to four times in a row if you're close. Dodge or block these.
• Overhead Slam: A big downward strike that does heavy damage and can stun you with its shockwave. Watch out for that.
• Charge: He'll rush you, sometimes with a shield bash to stun, sometimes followed by melee hits.
• Whirlwind: He spins around with his weapon out.

Phases:

1. The boss's health bar is split into four sections. Every 25% health lost, he sheds armor, becoming slightly faster.
2. For the first 75% of the fight, keep your distance. Lock on and stay just outside his melee range. Dodge or block when he closes in. His attacks leave tiny openings, but his Overhead Slam is the best chance to get a hit or two in after dodging it.
3. Once he's at 25% health, he ditches his shield and mostly uses the Whirlwind attack. Backpedal to stay away until he finishes his ~nine rotations. Then, quickly rush in for one or two hits and retreat. Repeat this until he's down.

• Patience is key here. Wait for those small openings.
• The Overhead Slam is your best bet for a safe hit after dodging.
• When he's at low health, focus on dodging his whirlwind and only attacking after he finishes his spin.

After you finally put The First Warden down, you'll earn the 'So that's a lord!' achievement/trophy. Don't forget to grab the loot he drops: a Sealed Rune (Big) and the Greatsword – Persistence. You'll also see a red Checkpoint Crystal appear. Use it to save your game and upgrade Harkyn. You should have enough experience for about three attribute points – Faith is usually a solid choice. Once you're done at the crystal, head through the other door. Oh, and upgrading Harkyn for the first time nets you the 'Give him Power' achievement/trophy.
