Explore the Master Rank, new gameplay systems like Switch Skill Swap, Silkbinds, locations, monsters, characters, and more in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.
When Monster Hunter Rise launched on the Nintendo Switch in March 2021, it was a good game, but veterans found it on the easier side. The expansion, Sunbreak, aims to change that with the addition of Master Rank (also known as G-Rank). Expect to fight a host of new monsters, including more powerful variants of the current roster, alongside many new features.
New Gameplay Systems
The new gameplay system is called “Switch Skill Swap.” This allows you to change your Switch Skills on the fly and even create loadouts for different skill sets. You can save loadouts of Switch Skills to each scroll and change them mid-battle.
Another addition is the “Swap Evade.” After using Switch Skill Swap, you can use the roll button to perform a jumping dodge in any direction, allowing you to maintain distance from monsters.
Finally, an improved wall-running system allows you to dash, jump, or use a midair evade into the wall without using the wirebug gauge. This option can be turned off in the settings.
New Silkbinds
Each of the 14 weapon types will have new silkbinds to discover, adding new moves and attacks to your arsenal. You can find out more about them here.
New Locations
There are two new locations to hunt in: the Citadel, centered around the ruins of an old castle with diverse environments, and the Jungle, a fan-favorite from previous games known for its warm climate, abundant rainfall, expansive caverns, lush waterfalls, and waterside areas.
New Monsters
Sunbreak brings at least 13 announced monsters. Newcomers include the Elder Dragon Malzeno, the boulder-like Garangolm, and the ice wolf-like Lunagaron. Returning monsters include Astalos, Gore Magala, Espinas, Daimyo Hermitaur, Seregios, and Shogun Ceanataur. New subspecies include Aurora Somnacanth, Magma Almudron, Blood Orange Bishaten, and Pyre Rakna-Kadaki.
New Characters
You’ll meet new allies in Sunbreak, including the knights of the Royal Order at the headquarters in Elgado.
New Follower Collab Quests
This single-player activity lets you go on quests with various story characters for exclusive rewards. There are two types:
- Follower Quests: Followers are powerful allies who hunt with you. Completing their quests deepens your bond, allowing you to call for their support in Support Surveys.
- Support Surveys: These allow you to call upon Followers with whom you have a deep bond. Each follower can have different weapons, though they have a preferred one.
New Weapons
Each of the 14 weapon types will have a variety of new weapons to craft, primarily from new monsters, with potential upgrades to older weapons.
New Armors
Expect various new armor sets crafted from the new monsters introduced in Sunbreak.
New Endemic Life
Sunbreak introduces new endemic life, including two types of Morphed Wirebugs:
- Ruby Wirebug: Boosts the damage of Mounted Punishers.
- Gold Wirebug: Causes monsters to drop more materials when hit with mounted attacks.
Other new lifeforms include:
- Spearsquid: Attacks large monsters that cross their path.
- Starburst Bug: Stationary beetles found against walls that release an exploding dust when impacted by monsters.
