Beginners Guide to Crafting
Unlock the secrets of New World's crafting system! Learn about Refining, Crafting, and how to level up each of the 12 trade skills to become a master artisan.
Hey there, adventurer! So you're looking to get into crafting in New World? Awesome choice! It's a huge part of the game, letting you make your own gear, consumables, and even furniture. Think of it like this: you've got two main branches – Refining and Crafting. Let's break down what each one does and how you can get good at them.
Refining: Turning Raw into Ready
First up is Refining. This is where you take all those raw materials you've gathered out in the world and turn them into something more useful. You've got five key Refining tradeskills:
- Leatherworking: This is for processing Leather and Tannin. Super handy if you're planning on going into Armoring or Weaponsmithing later on.
- Woodworking: You'll be working with Timber and Lumber here. It's useful for Arcana and Furnishing.
- Stonecutting: This one's cool because you can cut Stone Blocks and even fancy Gems that you can socket into your gear. It's essential for Jewelcrafting.
- Smelting: Get ready to turn Ore into Ingots. This is a big one, useful for Weaponsmithing, Armoring, Engineering, and Arcana.
- Weaving: Here you'll process Linen and Silk, which are primarily used in Armoring.
How to Level Up Refining: Honestly, leveling up your Refining skills is pretty straightforward. It's mostly about using the materials you've already gathered. The biggest tip here is to always try and refine the highest tier of material you can for any given skill. It gives you a nice boost in XP and makes the process faster. Just keep refining everything you get, and you'll naturally level these up.
Stonecutting has a little quirk. While you can level it by cutting Gems, you might not find enough of them. So, for Stonecutting, it's usually better to just gather Stone from boulders and cut Stone Blocks. Once you hit level 50 in Stonecutting, you can start crafting Expedition Keys. To do this, you'll need materials often found from Corruption Portals, so keep an eye out for those opportunities!
Crafting: Making the Actual Stuff
Now, onto the main event: Crafting! This is where you take your refined materials and turn them into actual items. You've got seven Crafting tradeskills:
- Weaponsmithing: Make Melee Weapons and Shields. Just a heads-up, Spears aren't made here; they're under Engineering.
- Armoring: Craft all types of Armor – Light, Medium, and Heavy.
- Engineering: This is where you'll craft Spears, Muskets, Bows, plus all the ammo like Arrows and Bullets, and even Gathering Tools.
- Jewelcrafting: Create all your Jewelry – rings, amulets, earrings – and cut those Gems.
- Arcana: Craft Staffs, Gauntlets, and essential Potions.
- Cooking: Whip up Rations, Meals, and even Fishing Bait.
- Furnishing: Make Furniture for your house and Wall-mounted trophies.
How to Level Up Crafting: Alright, crafting takes a bit more grind than refining. You'll need to focus on specific recipes to hit those higher skill levels. Arcana and Cooking are generally easier to get going with because you'll always be making Potions or Food for your own use. If you're a Musket or Bow user, focusing on crafting Arrows or Bullets for Engineering can also speed things up.
Armoring and Weaponsmithing can be a bit more of a pain. You might not always have enough recipes or materials to just level up as you play. Your best bet is to find recipes that give good XP for the materials they cost and grind those out. For Armoring, sometimes making Medium or Light Armor using Linen is more efficient than using the Forge if you have a lot of Linen stockpiled.
Jewelcrafting is probably the toughest one to level. It's a slow burn, and you'll mostly be crafting different pieces of jewelry. These often require a good chunk of resources, so you might find yourself needing a good amount of Gold to buy materials from the Trading Post. Stick with it, though – having your own supply of crafted jewelry is super valuable!
