Alright, so you've made your way to the Mahalo Trail. It's pretty straightforward, but there are a couple of important things that happen here, so let's make sure you don't miss 'em.

Walkthrough

First off, just follow the trail upwards. You'll eventually run into a girl dressed all in white. She'll have a quick chat with you. After that, just keep following the path.

You'll then enter a new area, and a cutscene will kick in. The game's basically telling you this girl is important, so pay attention! Head up and talk to her again. She'll ask for your help saving a Pokémon called 'Nebby' that's stuck on the bridge.

After she heals you up, it's time to head onto the bridge. As you start moving, you'll immediately get into a battle with a wild Spearow.

After the battle, just keep walking. You'll trigger another cutscene – this one's a bit more epic! Chat with the girl again, and she'll introduce herself and give you a Sparkling Stone. Definitely a key item, so make sure you grab it!
Keep talking with her for a bit longer, and then she'll head back with you to Iki Town. Once you're there, you'll meet Kukui again. He'll introduce the girl as his assistant. Just then, Kahuna Hala shows up too.
Kukui's next move is to give you your very own Pokédex! Pretty cool, right? He also hands over your Trainer Passport. Now, you need to head back home to show your mom the Pokémon you just got.
As you head down the stairs at home, Hau will start a conversation. There's a good bit of dialogue here, but the main thing is about that Sparkling Stone you found. Hala will take it from you, but trust me, it's worth it.
Finally, you'll get back to your house. Your mom will be super excited about your new Pokémon, and you'll get to rest up for the night. The next morning, you'll hear a knock at the door. Before you can even get up, Kukui bursts in and invites you to Route 1. Head outside, go down the stairs, and head east. Follow the path, and you'll find him waiting for you on Route 1.

Tips

Don't worry about losing the Sparkling Stone; it's part of the story progression and leads to bigger things.
Pay attention during the cutscenes, especially when meeting the girl and Kukui, as they introduce important characters and items.
