Introduction

Welcome to Aperture Science, where the future of testing is now! This guide will walk you through the initial chambers of Portal, introducing you to the fundamental mechanics and preparing you for the challenges ahead. Pay close attention to GLaDOS's instructions, as they often contain subtle clues (and not-so-subtle sarcasm).

Chamber 00: The Awakening

Your journey begins in a small, sterile chamber. You'll awaken on a bed, facing a radio playing a jaunty tune. Take a moment to absorb your surroundings.

  • Observation: Notice the various monitors and the general clinical aesthetic. This is your new home for a while.
  • Movement: Use the W, A, S, D keys to move around the room. The mouse controls your camera.
  • Interaction: Approach the door. It will automatically open, revealing a small hallway.

Chamber 01: Basic Portal Mechanics

This is where you'll receive your first taste of portal technology. GLaDOS will begin her delightful commentary, guiding you through the basics.

  1. The Portal Gun: As you enter, GLaDOS will instruct you to pick up the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, or "Portal Gun." It's lying on a pedestal directly in front of you. Press E to pick it up.
  2. Blue Portal: GLaDOS will prompt you to fire your first portal. Aim at the white wall directly across from you and click the Left Mouse Button. A blue portal will appear.
  3. Orange Portal: Next, GLaDOS will instruct you to fire an orange portal. Aim at the white wall to your right and click the Right Mouse Button. An orange portal will appear.
  4. Traversing Portals: Walk through the blue portal. You will instantly emerge from the orange portal. This demonstrates the core mechanic of the game: instantaneous travel between two points.
  5. The Cube and Button: In the next section, you'll encounter a Weighted Storage Cube and a large red Button on the floor.
    • Strategy: Use your Portal Gun to create a portal on the wall near the cube and another on the wall near the button. Walk through one portal, grab the cube (E), and then walk through the other portal to place the cube on the button.
    • Solution: Place the cube on the button to open the exit door.
  6. Exit: Proceed through the newly opened door to Chamber 02.

Chamber 02: Momentum and Flinging

Chamber 02 introduces the concept of momentum transfer, a crucial element for solving more complex puzzles.

  • High Drop: You'll see a platform high above a pit. GLaDOS will explain that momentum is conserved when traveling through portals.
  • The Fling:
    1. Fire a blue portal on the floor of the pit.
    2. Fire an orange portal on the wall of the platform you want to reach.
    3. Jump into the blue portal. Your downward momentum will be converted into horizontal momentum, launching you out of the orange portal and onto the platform. This technique is known as a "fling."
  • Retrieving the Cube: On the platform, you'll find another Weighted Storage Cube. Use the same fling technique to get back down to the lower level with the cube.
  • Activating the Lift: Place the cube on the button to activate the lift. Step onto the lift to ascend to the next section.
  • Final Fling: At the top, you'll face another gap. Perform another fling to cross the gap and reach the exit.

You've now mastered the basic principles of portal travel and momentum. The challenges ahead will build upon these foundations, so keep practicing!
