Part 1

Part 1 of the Prey (2006) walkthrough guide. Learn about the game's introduction, controls, weapons, enemies, and the beginning of the walkthrough.

Prey is a highly ambitious game developed by 3D Realms and Human Head studios. You take on the role of a man named Tommy, a young Cherokee who is eager to cut his roots and set out into the world. Unfortunately, during one seemingly normal night at the Roundhouse bar, Earth is attacked by aliens who want to annihilate every living thing on the planet. Sure, Prey doesn't have the most original storyline, but it executes the scenario very well. Prey's storyline is arguably one of the best seen in any FPS to date.

This guide was written based on my experiences with the Xbox 360 version of Prey. It can still, however, be used in conjunction with the PC version of the game, just ignore all of the mention of achievements and any reference to the buttons on th

Weapons:

WRENCH

The Wrench is Prey's melee weapon, found during the first level, "Last Call," on the bar counter. It has two attack types: a rapid swing with the right trigger and a powerful charged swing with the left trigger. In single player, use it when out of ammo or to conserve ammo for boss fights. It's effective against Fodder and normal Hunters but struggles against tougher enemies. In multiplayer, it's always available and can be useful if used quickly or to confuse opponents.

HUNTER RIFLE

The Hunter Rifle is the first gun found in single player and is the starting weapon in multiplayer. While not the most powerful for standard firing, it excels as a sniper rifle. Use the left trigger to aim through the scope, and the left and right bumpers to zoom in and out. Using it as a sniper consumes more ammunition. This weapon is crucial for dealing with enemy snipers due to its scope, which no other weapon possesses.

Part 3

Explore the advanced weaponry of Prey (2006) in Part 3 of our guide. Learn about Crawlers, the Spirit Bow, Leech Gun, and Autocannon.

This section of the guide covers advanced weapons and their uses in both single-player and multiplayer modes of Prey (2006).

Hunter Rifle (Multiplayer): While the Hunter Rifle can be used as a sniper rifle, lag in multiplayer can make it challenging. However, you can catch opponents off guard by quickly entering sniper mode and firing. A single hit is often enough to kill or severely wound an enemy.

Crawlers

Crawlers function as grenades in Prey. They can be found on the ground throughout single-player levels. Crawlers have two firing modes: Standard grenade mode (press the right trigger or 'X' button while another weapon is equipped) and proximity mode (press the left trigger, then throw). In proximity mode, a thrown crawler will stick to its target. When thrown normally, they bounce before exploding, making kills difficult unless the enemy is in an enclosed space. Crawlers are effective in boss battles when set to proximity mode, sticking to the boss and dealing significant damage.

In multiplayer, crawlers are effective when used strategically. In proximity mode, they can be stuck to opponents. Throwing them in front of you while fleeing can surprise pursuers. Placing them in strategic locations can also catch opponents off guard. Crawlers thrown using the right trigger or 'X' button in enclosed areas can be effective with luck.

Spirit Bow

The Spirit Bow is used during Spirit Walking. In single-player, it's first acquired in the "Rites of Passage" level. While in spirit form, the bow can damage enemies, though it's not particularly powerful. You can potentially eliminate hunters before they notice you. The Spirit Bow can only be used while your spirit health is full; each shot depletes the spirit meter. Once depleted, you can no longer use the bow but can still spirit walk. Enemy attacks also lower your spirit gauge. Spirit walking allows you to solve puzzles, pass through forcefields, and cross spirit bridges. It's crucial to spirit walk in a safe location, as your physical body is vulnerable and will be returned to when hit.

In multiplayer, spirit walking is less useful but can be employed in specific situations. For instance, you can spirit walk through doors to scout ahead or potentially eliminate approaching opponents. In multiplayer, spirit form duration is limited by a continuously depleting spirit meter. The meter can be recharged by collecting energy from fallen enemies or by picking up spirit bags.

Leech Gun

The Leech Gun is a powerful weapon, first found near the end of the "Second Chances" level in single-player. Its unique feature is its recharging mechanism: instead of ammo pickups, it uses special leech gun stations found on walls or ceilings. To recharge, aim the Leech Gun at a station and hold the left trigger until it's fully recharged.

There are four types of leech gun stations: Plasma (red energy, standard charge), Electricity (powerful but difficult to aim and depletes quickly), Frost (requires close range), and Sun Beam (strongest, fires a large beam). The Sun Beam station provides the most potent ammunition.

Autocannon

The Autocannon is a powerful weapon that fires rapidly.

Part 5

Learn about the various enemies in Prey (2006), including Gasplants, Drones, Harvesters, Mutates, and Centurions, and discover strategies to defeat them.

Walkthrough:

This section details various enemies encountered in Prey (2006) and provides strategies for defeating them.

Gasplants

Gasplants are large, flying enemies that resemble balls of gas. When killed, they release acid. Avoid standing directly beneath them when they are defeated. Any weapon can be effective against them. Their primary attack involves hovering, grabbing the player, lifting them into the air, and then dropping and slashing, which deals significant damage. Be cautious when encountering them while flying in a shuttle, as shooting them can damage the shuttle.

Drones

Drones are flying enemies that fire plasma energy. They can be particularly annoying, especially when multiple drones are present. The acid sprayer weapon is effective if you can get close enough. Explosives are also an option. Fighting drones while in a shuttle is generally easier: use the tractor beam (left trigger) to attach the drone, then fire cannons to destroy it.

Harvesters

Harvesters are frequently encountered in the latter half of the game and come in crawling and flying variations. They use crawler launchers. Explosive weapons, like the crawler launcher, are effective against flying harvesters. Destroying the lower body of a flying harvester will cause it to fall, and it will explode. Crawling harvesters can make fighting difficult by using their crawler launcher to create a cloud when explosives are used. The crawler launcher's cloud shield (left trigger) can protect against harvester attacks.

Mutates

Mutates are large, mutated humans with a monstrous appearance. They are fast melee enemies that charge and swing scythe-like appendages. The best strategy is to dodge to the side when they charge. If their scythe gets stuck in the ground, it presents an opportunity for free attacks. Facing multiple mutates simultaneously makes this more challenging.

Centurions

Centurions are massive, hulking enemies. The first encounter is during the game's initial boss battle. Later encounters feature less formidable versions. They possess two Auto-Cannons for hands, making them dangerous opponents. Seek cover or higher ground when facing them, as their rapid AutoCannon fire can quickly deplete health. Crawlers and explosives are effective against Centurions.
