Welcome to the Zone, Stalker!
This is my guide for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly, taking you through the 'Lost To The Zone' storyline, with a lot of tips and tricks on the way. You can download Anomaly here:
Anomaly is a huge mod package which allows you to play in all the regions from all the first three games, including cut content. You can play Anomaly's story until it ends, at which point the game may let you continue your adventure as a sandbox experience, or you can just play in sandbox mode anyway and ignore the story. There are also other game modes you can experiment with if Anomaly's default modes are still not enough Zone. Please, see the Miscellaneous Tips & Tricks section for details on many of the additions to Anomaly since the original games.
This guide is written as an open-ended walkthrough, allowing you to follow the story mode and complete all the missions in linear fashion, while also directing you to territories in the Zone which are suitable for visiting at each stage of the story. You generally want to stay in the assigned neighbourhoods until the story pushes you elsewhere, as the Zone will not forgive you for exploring where you don't yet belong.
This guide was written for version 1.5.2 of Anomaly, which can be found here:
Despite a few apparent bug fixes and improvements, I did not update to version 1.5.3, because it forces compatibility with GSC Game World Fan Content Creation Guidelines. This was necessary because Anomaly is a free mod which contains all the content from the first three S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, meaning you can effectively play them without buying them. Anomaly in 1.5.3 is now compelled to comply with the developers' wishes for legal reasons, and this affects mod compatibility - a lot of mods made for Anomaly may be disabled if GSC does not like them. If you are playing on a different version of Anomaly, please, be aware that some of the details in this guide may no longer match your experience.
You can learn more about the Anomaly mod at these links:
This guide may be updated in the future to be compatible with version 1.6 when it releases.
OPTIONAL MODS
There are loads of mods available for Anomaly, far too many to list. I recommend the following:
Quick Companion Teleport - This is almost essential for Anomaly. The NumPad 6 hotkey is assigned to immediately teleport all your companions to your location if they are found in the same sector. I used this one a lot in my playthroughs, and some quests may even break without it. (You may have to mash the key several times while moving around to get your companions to teleport to you.)
Companion Stealth Headlamps - Companions turn off their headlamps when in STEALTH mode, so that they are not constantly giving away the team's position.
Mutant Bleeding - This is a nice QoL addition, making mutants bleed out and die in combat, rather than forcing you to put them down each and every time. You can therefore do some damage, confirm that the mutant is bleeding, then just camp somewhere and time them out.
Weather Revamped - The weather in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is already dramatic, but this mod ramps it up to 11. The rain s

- Always keep an eye on your ammo count and radiation levels.
- Scavenge everything you can, but know when to cut your losses.
- Stick to cover during firefights; the Zone is unforgiving.
- Use your PDA to track objectives and important locations.
- Don't be afraid to retreat if a situation looks too hairy. Survival is key!
Miscellaneous Tips & Tricks
Master S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chornobyl - Enhanced Edition with essential tips on health, survival, and using debug mode.
Cheats:
- Open the launcher and check the box marked Debug Mode, found under Misc Settings.
- Once in the game, press F7 to bring up the console (a menu for cheats).
- Click on the cheat you want, or press the appropriate hotkey, then press ESC to close the console.
Health Management:
Your overall health status is represented by three bars at the bottom left of your screen (HUD (heads-up display — the on-screen icons showing health, ammo and the minimap) - Heads-Up Display), along with circular (negative effect) or square (positive buff) grey icons to the right of these bars.
- Sleeping is not an effective way to heal and can be dangerous if you wake up without food or drink.
- Before sleeping, cure all status effects indicated by circular grey icons (like radiation or bleeding). Then, eat something, drink something, and ensure you have both food and drink ready for when you wake up, especially for longer sleeps.
- Sleeping bags are useful for creating beds, but must be deployed in an area marked as an emission shelter (a safe zone during radioactive storms) to be usable.
- First-aid kits provide strong healing but take a long time to use, leaving you vulnerable. Stimpacks are more expensive but lighter and faster.
- Avoid cooking and hunting for meat; it's fiddly and requires a cooking kit, matches, meat, water, and a campfire. It's easier to buy two or three cheap food items from a trader.
- Damage over Time (DoT) is common. If you're taking damage and can't identify the cause, open your inventory and check the damage status bars in the bottom panel; any icon flashing red indicates the problem.
- Fall damage is minimal in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chornobyl - Enhanced Edition; you will almost certainly survive most falls. Falling can be a good way to escape mutants, as they must follow you the long way down. Crouching before a fall can reduce damage further.
- When choosing armour, prioritize upgrades for health restoration and wound healing. Do the same when selecting artefacts (items with special properties) and armour modules.
- Note the locations of medics; they can fully cure you for a small amount of money (pennies).
Survival Tips:
- Save your game frequently. The Zone is indifferent to your survival.
- Manage your inventory weight carefully. Prioritize ammo for your chosen weapons (and grenades), then repair items (like glue and oils), then curatives you are low on, then artefacts. Collect light items like drugs, faction patches, and paper cash as they can pay off later. Staying light allows you to move quickly and conserve stamina.
- Running, jumping, and shooting increase fatigue, which depletes your stamina bar. Avoid running everywhere to prevent running out of stamina, which can leave you unable to move, crouch, or jump, and reduces your chances of outrunning emissions (sudden, dangerous environmental events).
- Information is valuable. Ensure your headlamp has nightvision capabilities, upgrade your PDA (Personal Data Assistant, which shows maps and information), or get a better detector. Keep batteries topped up for these items.
- Scout areas from a safe, elevated position using binoculars or scoped rifles to know enemy positions and avoid surprises.
- Try to travel during the day and in good weather. Poor weather and low light negatively affect you but not enemies. While humans may have trouble spotting you in the dark if you're sneaking, gunfire makes you fully visible. Enemies have a significant advantage at night and in bad weather. You can sleep to wait for better conditions or adjust weather settings in the menu.
- Use anomalies (dangerous environmental hazards) to your advantage against mutants, as humans are unaffected by them.
