Your Stellaris empire creation journey starts here! Learn about species appearance, traits, homeworlds, government ethics, and more to build your unique galactic civilization.
Alright, so you've booted up Stellaris and you're staring at the empire creation screen. Don't sweat it! Think of this as building your own custom civilization from the ground up. We're going to walk through all the important bits so you can craft an empire that's truly yours.
Species
First up, let's talk about your species. This is who you'll be playing as!
Appearance
This is pretty straightforward – it's how your species looks! This affects not just the portraits you see on screen, but also how your Pops (that's the general population doing the work) and your Leaders (like governors and scientists) will appear. Some portraits are locked to specific government types, like the Machine Intelligence Authority needing that cool robot look. The game will usually let you know if you've picked something incompatible, often by highlighting it red.
Species Name
Here you get to name your species. You'll fill in the singular name, the plural, and the adjective form (think Human, Humans, Human). You can also write a short biography for your species, which is purely for flavor – it won't change how the game plays out.
Name Lists
This section lets you pick from various name lists. These will be used to randomly generate names for your Leaders, Planets, Ships, and Fleets. You can also set a Ship Prefix, like the classic 'ISS' for your Imperial ships.
Traits
Traits are super important! They give your species unique bonuses or penalties that affect things like how well your Pops perform their jobs, how habitable certain planets are for you, and even how much Housing or Amenities you need. If you're feeling overwhelmed, a solid go-to combo is Rapid Breeders, Intelligent, and Natural Engineers. These are all positive traits. For a bit of a challenge and to get more points to spend, consider picking a Negative Trait. Unruly is a popular choice; it impacts your Empire Sprawl a bit, but the two free trait points you get are usually well worth the minor downside. We'll get into Empire Sprawl later!
Homeworld
Now, where do you call home?
Name & Class
You get to pick your starting Homeworld here. The type of planet you choose directly impacts your species' habitability. For example, if you pick a 'Wet' planet like a 'Continental' world, your species will be 80% habitability there. Other 'wet' planets like Ocean or Tropical will be less habitable (60%), and 'Dry' or 'Cold' worlds will be much worse (20%). You also get to choose your starting solar system. Picking the Sol System means your planets will be named after our own solar system's planets!
City Appearance
This is purely cosmetic, just pick the city style you like best!
Empire
This is where you define the core of your civilization.
Origin
Origins give your species a backstory and often come with some nice bonuses. Many have specific requirements – for instance, the Mechanist origin needs your empire to lean towards the Materialist ethos. There are also many DLC-specific origins like Syncretic Evolution or Tree of Life. If you're looking for the most options, the Federations DLC adds a bunch of them.
Government & Ethics
This is arguably the most critical part of empire creation. Here you'll set your empire's Ethics, Authority type, and Civics. These choices fundamentally shape how you'll play the game. For example, a Fanatic Pacifist empire is strictly forbidden from declaring offensive wars; they can only fight defensively. You get three Ethic Points, but you can't pick directly opposing ethics, like Xenophile and Xenophobe. You can either pick three common ethics or one fanatic ethic and one common one. The central option, Gestalt Consciousness, uses all your Ethic Points and drastically changes how you build and interact with the galaxy. It has its strengths, but I'd steer clear of it for your very first game.
Next is Authority. Your Authority type affects how your ruler is elected and which Civics you can choose. Note that the Machine Intelligence and Hive Mind Authorities can only be selected if you're playing a Gestalt Consciousness empire.
Advisor Voice
The Advisor is your in-game narrator, warning you about threats and giving you updates on research and construction. By default, the game picks one based on your ethos, but you can choose any voice you like.
Empire Name
Time to name your empire and its adjective! You can click the little die icon to randomize it if you're stuck.
Flag
Your empire's flag and colors are purely cosmetic, but they're also how your empire will appear on the galaxy map.
Ship Appearance
Another cosmetic choice – pick the style for your ships!
Ruler
Here you can customize the appearance of your starting ruler, as well as their title and their heir's title.
That covers the basics of empire creation! Once you've got all that set, you're ready to jump into the galaxy.
