Unlock the full potential of your amiibo in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U! Learn how to train Figure Players, utilize Send on a Journey, and optimize their skills for victory.

amiibo are figurines and accessories that interact with compatible games by sending or receiving data via near-field communication (NFC). In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, you can hold an amiibo on top of the joystick on the right Joy-Con or in the middle of the Pro Controller to unlock content or store data. Access amiibo options by navigating to Games & More → amiibo.

Figure Player (FP): If your amiibo's character is a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it can become a Figure Player (FP). You can battle with your FP or challenge other FPs. This includes amiibos from the Super Smash Bros. Collection and variants from other series like Luigi from the Super Mario Collection. Even amiibos marketed for older systems like the Nintendo Wii U can be used. A new FP starts with poor skill and strategy and learns through experience via 'Send on a Journey,' 'Smash,' or 'Level Up.'

Send on a Journey: (Requires Ver. 3.1.0 or above) Found at Games & More → amiibo → Send on a Journey. Your FP will battle other users' FPs online in 3 rounds, with changing rules and opponents each round. This mode requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. After three rounds, you earn small rewards like SP. Milestones include placing first for the first time, winning 10 times, and winning all three rounds in one journey. This mode makes training and battling easier, but an untrained FP will likely lose initially. You are limited to one journey per day, so training offline first is recommended.

Smash: Speed up training by having a level 9 CPU version of the amiibo teach your FP its own moves and how to play. Access this via the amiibo menu or by selecting CPU / P2 on the fighter select screen in a normal Smash mode and scanning the amiibo. Set up rules (e.g., Stamina: 150, Stock: 2, Time Limit: 5:00, Spirits: Off) to mimic online journey conditions. Let them battle until the FP reaches level 30. If you are confident playing as the same fighter, you can battle your FP directly to improve its play. Afterward, use 'Level Up.'

Level Up: After training, give your FP spare spirits to increase its level to 50 or adjust its stats (attack & defense, skills, type, personality). FPs can inherit a type from a primary spirit, which provides advantages or disadvantages: Grab Type (Green) beats Shield Type (Blue), Shield Type (Blue) beats Attack Type (Red), and Attack Type (Red) beats Grab Type (Green). Purple is the Neutral type with no strengths or weaknesses. Initially, any primary spirit with a different type will change your FP's type. To change types later, you need to match the number of primary spirits of the same type already given to your FP. For example, to change from 5 Shield spirits to Grab type, you need to give 6 Grab spirits. Support spirits grant unique skills; all FPs have 3 slots for support skills. FPs can also learn new personalities from spirits or battling, affecting their playstyle (e.g., 'Show-Off' taunts often). If your FP develops bad habits, you can reset its level and strategy in 'Customize' by pressing L + R + X simultaneously. To prevent changes, turn 'Learn' off in 'Customize' once your FP is in peak condition. Once trained, return to 'Send on a Journey' for your FP to learn from battling highly trained opponents.
