Learn how to use amiibo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including Figure Players, training methods like Send on a Journey and Smash, and leveling up with spirits.
amiibo are figurines and other accessories such as plushies and cards that interact with compatible games by sending or receiving data via near-field communication (NFC). Once prompted, you can hold the accessory on top of the joystick on the right Joy-Con or in the middle of the Pro Controller to unlock content in-game or store data within the amiibo itself to play unique game modes.
To access amiibo options, go to Games & More → amiibo.
Figure Player (FP)
If your amiibo's character is a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it can become a Figure Player (FP) that you can battle with or challenge other FPs with. You can use amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. Collection or variants like Luigi from the Super Mario Collection. Even amiibo marketed for other systems like the Nintendo Wii U can be used.
A new FP has poor skill and strategy and needs to learn from experience. This can be done by using Send on a Journey, playing Smash, or using Level Up.
Send on a Journey
Requires Ver. 3.1.0 or above. Found at Games & More → amiibo → Send on a Journey.
The FP will battle other users' FPs in 3 rounds online (online modes require a Nintendo Switch Online membership). Rules and opponents change each round. After three rounds, you'll earn small rewards like SP. There are 3 milestones:
- The amiibo you sent on a journey placed first for the first time!
- The amiibo you sent on a journey won 10 times!
- The amiibo you sent on a journey won all three times in one journey!
This mode is designed to make training and battling your FP easier. If you send your FP on a journey without any training, it will likely lose every match initially. While it gains experience from losses, you are limited to one journey per day. It's recommended to train offline first and teach your FP the basics.
Smash
You can speed up training by getting a level 9 CPU version of the amiibo to teach your FP its own moves and how to play. Do this in the Smash option from the amiibo menu or by going to a Smash mode normally, selecting CPU / P2 on the fighter select screen, and then scanning the amiibo. Set rules like Stamina: 150, Stock: 2, Time Limit: 5:00, Spirits: Off to mimic online journey conditions. Turn spirits off so the CPU isn't at a disadvantage. Let them battle until the FP reaches level 30, as the CPU has little more to teach. Your FP should know the basics. If you can beat the Lv. 9 CPU playing as the same fighter, you can battle your FP to improve its play.
Level Up
After training, give your FP spare spirits to increase its level to 50 or adjust its attack & defense, skills, type, or personality. Your FP can inherit a type from a primary spirit. Types give advantages or disadvantages based on matchups: Green (Grab Type) beats Blue (Shield Type), Blue beats Red (Attack Type), and Red beats Green. Purple is Neutral type with no strengths or weaknesses.
A new FP is Neutral. Giving it a primary spirit of a different type will change it to that type. Your FP's type icon will glow yellow when it's about to inherit a new type. Changing types later requires matching the number of primary spirits of the same type already given. For example, to change from 5 Shield primary spirits to Grab type, you need to give 6 Grab primary spirits.
Giving a support spirit allows the FP to inherit its unique skill. FPs have 3 slots for support skills. Celebi's Great Autoheal is effective for out-surviving opponents.
FPs learn personalities from spirits or battling, affecting playstyle (e.g., a Show-Off will taunt often). FPs can learn bad habits; even at level 50, they can still learn. To reset level and strategy, go to 'Customize' and press L + R + X. To prevent style changes or bad habits, go to Customize and turn 'Learn' off.
Once your FP knows the basics, return to Send on a Journey to learn from other trained FPs.
