Learn how to master Player Mode in The King of Fighters XV. Discover effective strategies, CPU tactics, and stage breakdowns for a successful playthrough.

To see the true ending of The King of Fighters XV, you must set the difficulty to Mania and the timer to 3:00. It's also recommended to set continues to 3. This will give the CPU a significant advantage in health and damage output. If you are not concerned with the ending, you can adjust these settings as you see fit.

The CPU's behavior is consistent across all characters. They will attack when in range but rarely initiate clinches intentionally. They will only approach if you are far away and may jump to destroy buildings or targets in the sky. If you are positioned correctly when they land from a jump, a dash attack can be effective. Be aware that moving too close can trigger a 50/50 clinch, and sometimes a dash attack can be interrupted by the CPU.

There are two primary methods for defeating the CPU:

Method 1: Dash Attack While They're Getting Up

This method relies heavily on the dash attack. While a direct dash attack might be dodged or countered, performing it when slightly above or below the CPU on the Y-axis increases the chance of a hit as they attempt to move onto the same axis. Dash attacks knock opponents down. The goal is to immediately position yourself to land another dash attack as they get up, creating a combo of knockdowns. Be mindful that opponents will typically get up instantly after the third knockdown, and potentially after subsequent knockdowns as well. If you miss the timing, the CPU may counter with attacks or jump away. If they jump, you might be able to hit them on their descent. If you are hit, quickly press C then A / B to attempt another dash attack, potentially knocking them down before they can retaliate. The main drawback is the time limit; missed dash attacks can be costly on a 3-minute timer. Dash attacks also deal moderate damage and do not yield power-ups.

Method 2: Dash Attack, Then Grab

Similar to the first method, start with a dash attack when positioned above or below the CPU as they approach. After knocking them down, immediately pick them up and perform a grab (avoiding the Body Slam). This deals significant damage and causes the opponent to drop a power-up. If the opponent gets up in a dazed state, follow up with a beam attack or another dash attack. This method is faster and grants power-ups, making it ideal for the first stage to maximize power-up collection. The risk is that when you attempt to pick them up, the CPU might grab you instead. Despite this, it's generally a better option than a direct grab attempt due to the higher success rate and potential for power-ups. This strategy is also effective in the arcade version.

Mastering these methods takes practice. You can alternate between them or stick to the one that suits your playstyle. With consistent application, you should be able to complete the game.

1 Player Mode Overview

The game consists of 8 stages, meaning you will face each opponent twice. Unless you select Geon, your first opponent will always be Geon. You will recover some health after each stage, but not your full health. The CPU behavior and character similarities remain consistent.

Recommended characters for facing the CPU include Geon and Astro Guy due to their strong dash attacks. Rockey is also a viable choice, while Beetle Master may present the most challenge.
