4.16. Moving & Rotating Objects
Mastering the art of object placement is fundamental to creating stunning and functional lots in The Sims 4. Moving and rotating objects allows you to fine-tune your dess, ensuring every piece fits perfectly within your vision. Whether you're arranging furniture in a cozy living room or landscaping a sprawling garden, precise control over object positioning is crucial for a polished look.
The primary tool for moving objects is simply clicking and dragging them with your mouse. However, for more nuanced adjustments, several keyboard shortcuts and tools come into play. Holding the Alt key while dragging an object allows for free placement, meaning you can place it anywhere on the grid, even between grid squares. This is invaluable for creating asymmetrical dess or perfectly aligning objects against walls or other furniture. To rotate objects, the < and > keys are your best friends. Pressing these keys will rotate the selected object in 45-degree increments. For finer rotation control, hold down the Alt key while using the < and > keys to rotate the object in smaller, more precise angles.
When dealing with multiple objects, you can select them all by clicking and dragging a box around them or by holding Ctrl (or Cmd on Mac) and clicking on each object individually. Once selected, you can move and rotate them as a group, which is incredibly efficient for rearranging entire rooms or furniture sets. For objects that are difficult to select directly, the Eyedropper Tool (hotkey 'I') can be used to pick up an exact copy of an existing object, which can then be placed and manipulated.
Advanced Placement Techniques
- Free Placement (Alt Key): Hold Alt while dragging to ore the grid and place objects anywhere. This is perfect for creating unique arrangements and filling awkward spaces.
- Fine Rotation (Alt + < / >): Hold Alt while pressing the < or > keys for precise, incremental rotation. Essential for aligning objects at specific angles.
- Grid Snapping Toggle (Alt Key): While not strictly for moving, holding Alt can also be used to temporarily disable grid snapping when placing objects that are already on the grid, allowing for minor nudges.
- Group Selection: Select multiple objects by dragging a box or using Ctrl+click. Move and rotate them together for efficient des changes.
- Wall Placement: Objects designed to be placed on walls (like paintings or shelves) can often be moved up and down the wall by holding Alt and using the 9 and 0 keys.
Troubleshooting Common Placement Issues
Sometimes, objects might not behave as expected. If an object refuses to move or rotate, it might be because it's part of a larger set (like a sectional sofa) or has specific placement restrictions. Try using the Alt key for free placement, or consider deleting and re-placing the object. For items that are stuck, sometimes moving the surrounding objects can free them up. Remember that the game's collision detection can be finicky; use the Alt key to get items as close as you want them without them clipping through each other too severely.
