4.17. Using the Eyedropper & Des Tool

The Eyedropper and Des Tool are indispensable utilities in The Sims 4's Build Mode, streamlining the process of replicating and recoloring existing objects. These tools allow you to quickly copy an item's style, color, and even its state, saving you valuable time and effort when decorating or renovating. Mastering their use is key to efficient and aesthetically pleasing construction.

The Eyedropper Tool (hotkey 'I') functions much like its real-world counterpart: it 'picks up' a sample of whatever you click on. In The Sims 4, when you select the Eyedropper Tool and click on an object in your build, it immediately selects that object and places it into your active inventory, ready to be placed again. This is incredibly useful for duplicating items you've already placed, ensuring consistency in your des. For example, if you've spent time finding the perfect shade of blue for a sofa, you can use the Eyedropper to instantly grab another identical sofa without having to search for it in the Buy Mode catalog.

The Des Tool (hotkey 'R') is a powerful companion to the Eyedropper. Once you have an object selected (either by picking it up with the Eyedropper or by selecting it directly), pressing the 'R' key will bring up the color swatches for that specific object. This allows you to quickly change the color and pattern of the selected item to any of the available swatches. The real magic happens when you use the Des Tool on multiple objects of the same type. If you have several identical chairs placed, selecting one and using the Des Tool will bring up its swatches. Then, by holding down the Shift key while clicking on the other chairs, you can apply the selected swatch to all of them simultaneously. This is a massive time-saver for redecorating rooms with multiple pieces of furniture or changing the paint on several walls at once.

Workflow with Eyedropper and Des Tool

  1. Select the Tool: Click the Eyedropper icon in Build Mode or press 'I'.
  2. Pick Up Object: Click on the object you want to copy. It will be added to your cursor.
  3. Place Object: Click where you want to place the copied object.
  4. Activate Des Tool: With the copied object still selected (or by selecting it again), press 'R' or click the Des Tool icon.
  5. Choose Swatch: Select a new color or pattern from the available swatches.
  6. Apply to Multiple (Optional): Hold Shift and click on other identical objects to apply the chosen swatch to them all.

When to Use These Tools

  • Renovations: Quickly change the color scheme of an entire room or house.
  • Duplication: Easily place identical items without searching the catalog.
  • Consistency: Ensure all similar items in a build have the same style and color.
  • Experimentation: Quickly try out different color combinations on multiple objects.

These tools are not just for furniture; they work on walls, floors, windows, doors, and almost any other object in Build Mode. Understanding how to effectively use the Eyedropper and Des Tool will significantly speed up your building process and allow for more intricate and cohesive dess. They are essential for any Simmer who wants to create beautiful and functional homes efficiently.
