Alright, so you've survived your first day and your house is all built! Now it's time to really dive into being the Mayor of your new town in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It's not all ribbon cuttings and speeches, but there are some important first steps to take.

First things first, head back to the Town Hall. Isabelle will be there, ready to explain the difference between the counter and the fancy chair. Your very first mayoral task? Getting your picture taken for your Town Pass Card! You'll need to use the photo booth located on Main Street for this. Don't skip it!

Back at the Town Hall counter, you can chat with Isabelle for all sorts of advice about living in your town. She's also your go-to for getting some essential tools. You can get either a net or a fishing rod from her. Keep an eye on what Timmy and Tommy Nook are selling in their shop, because you'll want to grab whichever tool Isabelle *isn't* giving out. You can also buy a shovel from them later on, so make a mental note of that.

Isabelle is also your source for checking the citizen satisfaction level in your town. Keeping this high is key to achieving that coveted 'perfect town' status! Plus, while you're chatting with her, you can change your town tune and flag. If any villagers are driving you nuts with a catchphrase you accidentally taught them, she can help with that too.

Now, about that chair at the back of the Town Hall – that's where the real mayoral business happens. To start making big changes, like setting ordinances or constructing Public Works projects, you'll need a town development permit. You've already got one requirement down (your house!), but the other is getting 100 points of approval from your citizens. Isabelle can give you pointers on how to boost that approval rating, so just follow her lead. Once you hit that 100-point mark, you'll unlock all sorts of cool mayoral powers!

With those initial steps out of the way, you're pretty much free to shape your town as you see fit. Want to plant some flowers? Go for it! Fancy trying your hand at bug hunting or chopping down trees? You can do that too. Or maybe you're feeling more like digging up some ancient fossils. The choice is yours!
