Combat Basics
Mastering combat in Ghost of Tsushima is crucial for Jin Sakai's survival and the liberation of Tsushima. This section will guide you through the fundamental mechanics, from basic attacks to advanced stances and defensive maneuvers.
Understanding Your Stances
Jin has access to several combat stances, each designed to counter specific enemy types. Switching between these stances fluidly is key to efficient combat. You'll unlock new stances as you progress through the main story and complete certain Mythic Tales.
- Stone Stance: Effective against Swordsmen. Focuses on quick, precise strikes.
- How to use: Hold R2 and press X to switch.
- Strategy: Use heavy attacks (Triangle) to break a swordsman's guard, then follow up with light attacks (Square).
- Water Stance: Ideal for combating Shieldmen. Emphasizes powerful, sweeping attacks.
- How to use: Hold R2 and press Circle to switch.
- Strategy: The "Wave Strike" (hold Triangle) is excellent for staggering shieldmen and exposing them to further attacks.
- Wind Stance: Best suited for Spearmen. Focuses on kicks and parries to create openings.
- How to use: Hold R2 and press Triangle to switch.
- Strategy: The "Typhoon Kick" (hold Triangle) can knock spearmen off balance, giving you a window to strike.
- Moon Stance: Designed to take down Brutes. Utilizes strong, overhead strikes.
- How to use: Hold R2 and press Square to switch.
- Strategy: The "Moon Master" combo (repeated Triangle presses) is highly effective at breaking a brute's defense.
Basic Offensive and Defensive Maneuvers
Beyond stances, mastering your core combat actions will elevate your gameplay.
- Light Attacks (Square): Quick, low-damage strikes. Useful for maintaining pressure or finishing off weakened foes.
- Heavy Attacks (Triangle): Slower, high-damage strikes that can break enemy guards. Essential for opening up tougher opponents.
- Parry (L1): Timed press of L1 just before an enemy attack lands. A successful parry leaves the enemy vulnerable to a counter-attack.
- Perfect Parry: A parry executed with impeccable timing. Grants bonus Resolve and a more significant opening for a counter.
- Unblockable Attacks: Indicated by a red glint from the enemy. These cannot be parried or blocked and must be dodged.
- Dodge (Circle): Evade incoming attacks. Crucial for avoiding unblockable attacks and repositioning yourself.
- Roll: Double-tap Circle to perform a longer dodge, useful for creating distance.
- Block (L1): Hold L1 to defend against most standard attacks. Repeated blocking can deplete your guard, leaving you vulnerable.
Resolve and Healing
Resolve is your combat resource, displayed as yellow circles above your health bar. It's vital for both offensive and defensive actions.
- Gaining Resolve:
- Successfully parrying enemy attacks.
- Landing critical strikes.
- Defeating enemies.
- Completing certain objectives or discovering locations.
- Using Resolve:
- Healing: Press Down on the D-Pad to consume one segment of Resolve and restore a portion of your health. This is your primary healing method in combat.
- Special Techniques: Many powerful combat techniques and Ghost Weapons consume Resolve. For example, the "Heavenly Strike" (unlocked early in Act 1, often during the "Tale of Sensei Ishikawa") requires Resolve to execute.
Standoffs
Initiating a Standoff is a powerful way to begin an encounter and quickly thin out enemy ranks. You can initiate a Standoff by pressing Up on the D-Pad when approaching a group of enemies.
- How to Execute:
- Approach an enemy group and press Up on the D-Pad when prompted.
- Hold Triangle and release it just as an enemy lunges to perform a devastating one-hit kill.
- As you unlock Standoff Streak abilities through the Samurai skill tree, you can chain multiple kills by successfully timing additional Triangle presses.
- Strategy: Standoffs are excellent for clearing out weaker enemies quickly, especially archers or unarmored swordsmen, before engaging the remaining forces. Be aware that heavily armored enemies or leaders may require multiple Standoff streaks to defeat.
