The enemies you'll encounter in the combat sections will vary depending on the order you do the missions here. If you do Valravn before Surt, you will only face sword enemies here, and you'll face more difficult enemies on your way to fight Surt. If you do Surt first, you'll face sword enemies on the way to Surt, and more difficult enemies leading up to Valravn. You gain access to your focus ability when you fight the first of these two bosses, so whatever order you choose, you'll have your focus ability to help you deal with the tougher enemies in the second section you take on, so long as you actually finish one section before moving on to the second.

If you go through one section part of the way, and then leave and go to the other section, you'll still get the tougher enemies for that section, but you won't have your focus ability yet, to help you deal with them.

I recommend doing Valravn first, for story reasons, although Surt is an easier boss fight.

Walkthrough

Walk up to the door with the Surt symbol and it will open automatically after a short cutscene.

Lorestone 1/5: After a few feet, the path will split. Take the path on the right, and you'll find the Lorestone in a cave at the end of the path.

Return to where the path split and take the left path. Just before you reach the bridge ahead, to the left of the bridge, there's another stone head of Galina - Senua's mother, hidden beneath the waterfall. If you walk up to the carving and focus on it, you'll see a message from Senua's mother. This is a completely optional story interaction. There's no need to do this. There are no collectibles or trophies associates with the talking heads.

Cross the bridge, and keep on the path to the left. Soon you'll come to a Rune door, but before you can interact with it, you'll be attacked by enemies. Assuming that you're taking on the Surt area after the Valravn section:
- you'll start by facing 2 Swordsmen.

After you defeat them both, another Swordsman, and an enemy with a Mace will spawn.

When you've defeated those two, 2 Swordsman and another Mace enemy will appear.

After the fight, turn your attention to the door. Focus on it, to activate the puzzle.

There are two runes you'll need to find. The ᛉ shaped rune is the closest. Take the path to the right of the door. Looking away from the door, you'll see people who have been strung up on Y shaped wooden poles. In front of one of these poles, there's another straight pole. You can line the two up to make the ᛉ shape you need.

The second rune is further along the path. The path will turn left toward the rocks and go up a hill. At the top of the hill, looking back toward the door, you'll see two poles. One has a protrusion on the side, and you can line them up to make the ᚺ shape you need for the second Rune.

Follow the path beyond the door. It turns to the right, and goes up some stairs, then curves around a bit before turning left and going down a hill into a clearing. When you reach the clearing you'll be attacked by enemies once again.

Assuming you did the Valravn section first, these enemies will be stronger types of enemies. As usual, if you're doing the Surt section before Valravn, you will encounter only Swordsmen here.
- You'll be attacked first by a Shield Wielding enemy and a Swordsman.

When you kill an enemy, a Mace enemy will immediately Spawn.

After killing a second enemy, a Swordsman will appear.

When you take down all of these enemies (4 enemies total) another Shield enemy and a Mace enemy will spawn.

The first 2 Swordsmen will appear one at a time.

After you kill the 2nd Swordsmen, 2 more will spawn together.

When you kill a 3rd Swordsman, the 5th will spawn.

After the fight, inspect the door. You'll see that it has the same Surt seal that you saw on the door when you first entered Surt's challenge. This is a Surt gate. You'll need to find a stone monolith surrounded by burned bodies to begin the challenge to get through this gate. You can focus on the door to specifically activate the puzzle, but it's not necessary with these challenges.

To the left of the Surt gate, there's a wooden fence with an open door in the middle. Go through the door and up a hill. You'll find the 'sacrifice' at the top of the hill. Walk up to the stone monolith and focus on the Surt seal to begin the challenge.

The area will burst into flames, and you'll be challenged to run to the Surt gate as quickly as you can to escape the flames. This isn't difficult, but you need to be ready to run immediately. You only have a limited amount of time, and any hesitation will cause Senua to burn to death before she reaches the gate. If you don't realize that you need to run before you activate the stone monolith, you'll likely die here. Be prepared to run immediately down the path back to the gate. Since the wooden gate is on fire when you reach it, Senua can easily go crashing through the burning sticks that comprise the Surt gate to reach the next area.
