Learn about powerful Level 5 spells like Town Portal, Dimension Door, Resurrect True, Armageddon, and Summon Elemental in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era.

Town Portal

Town Portal is arguably the best spell in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, allowing you to teleport to any of your own towns. It is incredibly rare, with players often obtaining it only a few times in many playthroughs. With a high-level spellcasting hero, you can combine troops from multiple castles, escape dangerous situations deep in enemy territory, reinforce a threatened town at the last moment, or quickly travel across large maps, saving days or weeks of ground travel. This spell makes it possible to leave most of your castles practically undefended. To be useful, you need to have scouted the map beforehand and control more than one castle. Be mindful of your current spell points.

Dimension Door

Dimension Door is the cheapest level 5 spell and requires a hero with a very high knowledge rating to maximize its effectiveness. It offers similar functions to Town Portal but with slightly more difficulty. It can save a hero from danger, help your best army reach an undersieged castle if it's not too far, allow access to treasure-rich areas protected by strong monsters, or reach otherwise inaccessible parts of maps, like bypassing mountain chains. Teleporting next to wells is highly recommended. If no wells are present and spell points are low, travel to your nearest castle and stay the night. A high Logistics skill and items that increase movement, like Boots, allow you to cast Dimension Door more often. In theory, finding a well each time you are low on spell points could allow traversal of the entire map in days.

Resurrect True

Resurrect True is the best defensive combat spell, preventing permanent death. It is best cast on your best or most useful stacks, often your shooters who are frequently targeted by the computer enemy. The number of resurrected troops is calculated by multiplying your hero's Spell Power rating by 50x. For example, a Warlock with 20 spell points can resurrect 1000 hit points of dead troops, which could be 3 Titans, 16 Ogre Lords, or 100 Rangers. Combined with Mirror Image, it can make Titans superior to Dragons. Dragons are immune to all magic and cannot benefit from spells. The Necromancer can create more skeletons with their necromancy skill, and Vampire Lords can regenerate. Animate Dead costs 5 points less than Resurrect True but only works on undead. Resurrect and Resurrect True work on all living creatures except Dragons, but not on undead.

Armageddon

Armageddon is extremely useful with Dragons, especially Black Dragons, when your hero has expert wisdom and ample spell points. Since Dragons are immune to magic, you can cast Armageddon repeatedly without losing troops, unless the opponent has a significantly larger army, also has Dragons, or casts Anti-Magic on their highest-level stack. This is less likely against computer opponents but a risk against human players. If you don't have Dragons, other uses are limited. In Heroes of Might and Magic 1, Warlocks could be used for kamikaze attacks to weaken large armies, but this is less effective in Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. A hero with advanced wisdom is not enough to cast Armageddon. A mid-level hero with expert wisdom could be used for a kamikaze attack, but this is considered a waste. Elemental Storm can be a substitute if obtained. Casting Anti-Magic on your best stack and then Armageddon on the second turn is another option.

Summon Elemental

Summon Elemental is a good spell but the most expensive to cast. Items that benefit elementals are helpful. Like most level 5 spells, its effectiveness is directly related to your hero's Spell Power rating. This spell is almost as rare as Town Portal.
